Arcade build... which processor to go with?

I'm an avid arcade/mame system builder and I need to replace the rig in my arcade. Currently running a P4 3.2 and I'm just not happy with it with some of the emulation that's come out lately.

I've got two options mated up to the Gigabyte DS3L board.

q6600 g0
e8500

I'd like to overclock the piss out of whatever I go with but I need the maximum ghz available... # of cores doesn't really matter because most emulation software doesn't utilize anything past the 2nd core.

This rig will only be used about 3-4 hours a week and will be well venilated inside a full cabinet. I also don't want to do anything liquid.

I appreciate any reco's y'all can make... I haven't overclocked anything since the p3 days!

E8500 with a good heatsick 4+Ghz should be easy enough if that is a p35 based m/board
The q6600 will need a good water cooled set up to go near 3.7ghz stable

Do not go quad if you are gaming unless you are future proofing.
If the emulators do not go past 2nd core then "future proofing" is irrelevant.
Get an E8400 and get a DFI Bloodiron.

Best Heatsink is Thermalright Ultra-120 Extreme CPU Heatsink.
Edit:
Best thermal paste is OCZ Freeze
I would get Arctic Silver ACN-60ML Thermal material Remover & Surface Purifier to ready the CPU and Heatsink but it's up to you.
If you lap your Heatsink and CPU then you will get better performance but you would have to look in the FAQ's as I know very little about Lapping.

Go with the E8400. It's a little bit cheaper and will still overclock just about the same as the E8500.

get 8400 and OC'ed at 3,8 ghz and you will able to run almost all MAME game ROM's except Prop Cycle, Radikal Bikers and Vaport TRX maybe they need around 4,2ghz to run smoothly
strange thing I found that MACE running smoothly using 2,6ghz Quad Core utilizing all core!!! maybe that's the only MAME game that utilize Quad Core

That is weird... I haven't tried that out yet. I noticed most games took a dive when osdprocessors=4 was set.

is there any AMD Phenom II 940 user here running MAME? I want to see some MAME benchmark or performance with this newest AMD CPU
deafult clock and maybe some overclock result will be great
