Can't decide on which card to get. - Page 2

Thanks for the advice guys.

I think I'm leaning toward the 9800GTX+.

I have the $400 budget but it's not really my money; it's a graduation present. Thus I'm kinda forced to buy something soon, although I'd prefer to wait it out and see the new prices for the 200 series cards and whether they perform better with new drivers. I'll maybe even ask for cash instead.

It's also good to know that ATI cards would run fine in my setup. But just like Arjy said, it would be kind of strange.

It's curious that no one has yet recommended the 9800GX2. Any reason for that?

Also, no one has brought this topic up, but what about SLI? Like I said, I've heard a lot of bad things about it. Studdering, game crashes, bugs, etc. Is that true?

Last but not least, if I were to buy 2 9800GTX+'s and then Step Up 3 months later, what do you think I should go for?

Thanks.

If I were a NVIDIA guy, I would not start new line with the old product. I think they a no more fools than me.

So, I think that so called 9800 gtx+ is nothing less that test products of gtx 200 GPU on new line (there are some significant indication for that).

One of them - almost total lack of any information on 9800 gtx+ performance in SLI mode. If (on a speedy CPU and 2 real x16 connectors) 2x9800gtx+ =< 1.2 of the one, then it's the old core. If >= 1.5 - then it is an "abridged" version of gtx 200.

The only test I saw shows 1.6 increase (one is not enough, thou)

Someone explain this to me in a language you speak to a caveman trying to learn how to overclock please?

i'd just do 2x 9800GTX+ in SLI...

think of the 9800GTX+ as the 4850 if you're feeling conned out of performance, lol

Yeah... um... what is he saying?!

Anyway I think I've decided that I'm going to get a GTX 260.

The reasoning: Simply put, I really don't want to bother with SLI. My policy has always been to buy the fastest single card I can possibly buy (+rep to whoever tells me where I got that from) and that leaves the GTX 260.

Plus I think I'll Step Up the GTX 260 to a GTX 280 three months later using the proceeds I'll get from selling my 8800GT. The 9800GTX's would be a waste to Step Up and after they're obsolete, I think it would be a waste to have two kick ass cards that'll only sell for around $100 each. Emphasis on two.

But before I buy the GTX 260 I think I'll wait out a bit and see how the 9800GTX+ fairs.

I agree. I was going to suggest the 260 and upgrade afterwards. 1680x1050 suggests 1 card would suffice. I'm doing a similar route, 9800gtx --> 260
