Question about airbrushing

I'm not sure if I should post this here, but you all (OCN in general) are crazy knowledgable in everything known to man, and I trust your opinions, so I'll ask you.

My brother's birthday is coming up. He's 13, and he's recently shown that he has an eye for designing T-Shirts. I want to buy him an airbrush for his birthday, but I do not want to spend a lot of money. I'm not really willing to spend more than 150 dollars.

http://www.pearlpaint.com/shop~ocID~...oryID~5499.htm

My sister linked me to this site. It's for a store in Philadelphia, I believe. If there is something good on it, please let me know so I can consider it.

If any of you have ANY knowledge of airbrushes, I'd absolutely love you. I have no knowledge of these things but I want to get him one because I'm sure he'd have more than just one use for it. He makes t-shirts but he also builds skatepark stuff and draws on things with sharpie so I'm sure he'll find things to paint with this.

If this isn't supposed to go here, if an admin could move it that'd be great.

Will this be his very first airbrush? Or does he already have a basic one that he's learned with already and has been using?

Is he likely to always use one that you get for him? Or will it be just a passing fancy?

I can't be sure that he won't lose interest but I'm hoping he will use it for a long while. He's getting to that age where he's starting to try a bunch of hobbies and he really likes doing this, plus he's pretty good with just a sharpie.

I hope he sticks with his hobby. It sounds like he's got a real talent for graphic arts. And I applaud you for encouraging him, as well.

More on point, though, I would recommend a single-action airbrush for your brother. I learned on a single-action brush many years ago, and once I got the hang of things I graduated to a Badger Crescendo double-action airbrush. Single-action brushes are great when just learning the basics, though this website has some really good prices for even double-action airbrushes.

I would recommend anything from Paasche; I would personally go with the Paasche VL. That's an awesome value for a quality double-action airbrush with lots of accessories.

Something you might also want to consider is a good air source. You can invest in an air compressor or in cans of compressed air. The air compressor is the much better long-term investment, but is not cheap; cans of compressed air, available at most art and and hobby stores, are cheaper but are limited in capacity (you'll need to buy another can when the one you're using runs out).

Hope this helps you!

Another option for an air supply if you dont want to spend the bucks on a compressor is to get a portable air tank at an auto supply cut off the tire chuck and install a proper air fitting. those cans of air they sell get real expensive at + - $10 a pop. refilling the air tank is much cheaper
