4870 fan control?

Thread Starter
anyone know a good way of manually/automatically changing the fan speed on the 4870?

It's running hawt. Very hawt indeed. Causing a few heat issues in the ol' case.

isn't that a driver issue?
so i've heard...

unless you can find an overclocking tool like rivatuner of something that works with it

edit: i use rivatuner to change the fan speed on my GPU

If you bought a Asus card they have their own utility that you can use,if not your going to have to wait for a fix or update to Rivatuner and the other utilities. The rumor is end of July for rivatuner and no word on a fix or the other tools.I disconnected the blue wire from the fan on mine to force it to 100% fan speed temporarily.

Hotfix has been applied.

Although I doubt very much that it's intended to be a fix for the hotness. Anyway, it's fine but Rivatuner won't work with 4870 drivers yet. Oh, and it idles at 75/load at 95. I could quite literally cook an egg on it, and as it's directly below my poor ol' CPU I'd like to get shot of some of that heat

Interesting, I may just try that.

How exactly did you do that? Pair of wire clippers?

It's a fan speed issue and the hot fix does not correct it.Mine was 74c idle and 88c load but the fan would not go above 46% and was like 15% at idle.Like I said Asus has the only working utility right now.I forced my fan to 100% and my load temp is now like 70c.

How'd you disconnect the blue wire?

Gosh, I feel like some dude in some action film with some bomb type thing.

Actually, with the temps on this card that might not be so far from the truth.

Don't cut the wire, See here-

and here-

Just pulled the fan header out, lifted the little white plastic tab and pulled the blue wire out. No damage and instantly reversible. Fan now runs at 100% (pretty damn loud) but dropped 40c off my idle temps!!!
Quote:
Remove the fan connector and locate the blue wire. This is the PWM control wire. Using a pair of tweezers, lift the plastic lip holding the contact, and pull out the wire. Once electrically disconnected, the fan will spin at maximal speed.

No don't cut it.Disconnect the fan from the card and very carefully slightly lift the tiny tab that holds the blue wire into the plug and it will pull out with no effort at all.You can put it back in when their is a fix or working utility later.
