Hey guys as you can see from my post, i'm new member so wats up?

My dad is letting me build a new comp this summer so I want to see what u guys think of this new comp....I'm not super crazy rich so I think my budget will be under $1500 or $1800 not sure yet

CPU: Intel Core 2 Quad Q9450

Mobo: Asus Rampage Formula

Video Card: Sapphire ATI RADEON HD 4870

Ram: Corsair XMS2 Dominator TWIN2X4096-8500C5DF Matched Pairs 4GB Kit (2x2GB) or Corsair XMS2 TWIN2X4096-6400C5DHX Matched Pairs 4GB Kit (2x2GB)

HDD: Western Digital Caviar (WD7500AAKS) 3.5" 750GB (maybe 2, dunnoe yet)

PSU: Enermax Infiniti EIN720AWT 720W or Enermax Infiniti EIN650AWT 650W

Optical: Haven't decide yet

I think i'm planning to OC but I haven't OC before so this will probably be my first time

Plz tell me if you guys think I should add, change, or keep thees stuff.

Thanks

Don't worry, none of us are super crazy rich either, we're used to building rigs for about $1000 max. You can go crazy with that budget.

At any rate, what's this computer for? Gaming? Quads aren't the best at that, only half of your CPU will ever do anything because games aren't truly multi-threaded for them. If you're a gamer, get an E8400 or something from that family. If you're not, the multiplier on that is really low for OC'ing, you will like the Q6700 better. Don't waste your money on Corsair's Dominators, they're for pricks. Get G.Skill, it's better for OC'ing and not to mention is much cheaper. I have the 2x2GB 1066 kit and couldn't be happier. Uh, are you going to be CF'ing those 4870's, because that PSU is complete overkill for just one card. Downgrade in size to a 550 or something, Corsair makes a really nice 520W that has enough amperage for a decent video card like the 4870.

What monitor are you using?

Regardless the use, at this point, I'd recomment a Quad core CPU. I don't think you'd be upgrading soon(ish). I think the quad simply offers more advantages, and the marginal better overclocking capacity of a dually isn't worth downgrading. Given the extra features, I'd say the Q9450 isn't a bad pick at all (and since it's not your own money... )

Thus, these are my picks (under $1500... if your dad allows $1800, simply add a second HD 4870, or a new monitor if your current one is anything lower than a 20", 1680x1050 LCD or comparible CRT):
  • Thermaltake Armor+MX VH8000BWS Black Aluminum / Steel ATX Mid Tower Computer Case $134.99
  • DFI LANPARTY DK X48-T2RS LGA 775 Intel X48 ATX Intel Motherboard $224.99
  • VisionTek 900244 Radeon HD 4870 512MB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFire Supported Video Card $309.99
  • CORSAIR CMPSU-750TX 750W ATX12V / EPS12V Power Supply $129.99
  • Intel Core 2 Quad Q9450 Yorkfield 2.66GHz LGA 775 95W Quad-Core Processor Model BX80569Q9450 $329.99
  • G.SKILL 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 1066 (PC2 8500) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model F2-8500CL5D-4GBPK $89.99
  • Western Digital Caviar SE16 WD6400AAKS 640GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive $94.99
  • LITE-ON 20X DVD±R DVD Burner Black SATA Model iHAS120-04 $23.99
  • OCZ OCZTVEND2 120mm Rifle CPU Cooler $49.99
total: $1,388.91

I shed all the overpriced junk (Asus Rampage, Corsair RAM) and picked what I think are the best parts for the budget. The 640GB WD drive is a better drive than it's 750GB cousin. You could add a second one and still hit around $1,500.

Uhh maybe i'm drunk but honestly, i agree with grmnasasin0227, get a 45nm dual core CPU like the E8400 and overclock it. Because u r not gonna use crossfire, it makes no sense to use a mobo that is compatible with crossfire technology... but if that's ur plan, i'd rather grab a P5E3 Premium/WiFi-AP @n with a good DDR3 ram, of course, not high-end, but a good DDR3 ram. And I think that a 650W PSU is ore than enough, don't get the 750W one.

I'm not a heavy gamer so I think I'll go with quad right now.
The thing I dont really get is the Ram. Is there a big diff between 800 and 1066? If I decide to OC do I 100% have to OC the ram as well, I really dont get the time and the ratio, but the other stuff I get.
Nah, I'm not goin for CF, right now my mon is only a 19" so I'm waiting for boxing day for a 20" or 24". So I shouldn't go anything beyond 600W for PSU?

So all tht overprice stuff is bad? I dunnoe I really like an Asus mobo...cool I never even knew WD had a 640GB lol, I'll take a look at tht model. I think i'm goin to stick with a quad.

thx for the suggestion guys

Well, search on google for extreme power supply calculator, and u'll get an idea of the PSU u'll need for ur rig.

But, I don't think u'll need a bigger PSU... R u gonna make a crossfire rig?

Crap... you're in Canada

You might not go crossfire right now, but possibly in the future. So, I'd be ready and get a nice 750W PSU. The Corsair is very good and not too extremely priced.

Re-doing my list on a Canadian site. sorry about that

DDR3 ram is NOT worth the money. There is no gain in performance at this moment compared to good DDR2 RAM and the price difference is just too much.

I do recommend good RAM, and preferably DDR2 1000 or faster. It makes overclocking the CPU easier.

It makes sense to most of us on OCN it's all about performance/price here my friend. It's basically a preference whether you want a dual or quad cpu. Crossfire is awesome if you can afford it an why not have the capability in case you ever want to head in that direction.

Well, if he want's to use crossfire and a quad-core, the Q9450 is a good choice, but he'll need a nice cooling system, now, the motherboard i chose for him is a great option, specially because of the DDR3 and the compatibility with crossfire

Thts ok, I forgot to tell u guys I'm Canadian eh

NO DDR3 for me. I think itz pointless to buy them right now.

I'm not goin to Crossfire, I have no need for it right now so 1 is enough for me
