Not sure what RAM to get, need some help

Thread Starter
I'm putting together the following:

CPU: E8400 overclocked to ~4.0GHz to begin
MB: Asus P5E X38
Video: HD4850 or HD4870 (still deciding)
OS: Windows XP Pro, possible dual boot with Vista (ugh)

Was looking for some suggestions for RAM. I think 2GB would do for gaming, but if the price vs performance is right, I'd consider 4GB.

Thanks in advance.

Well for a 2x2 set, I would suggest this set.http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820231145
You can't beat it for the price.

For a 1x1 set, I like Gskill again.http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820231098

Any advantages/downsides to using a 2x2 vs a 1x1? I don't see myself EVER getting more than 4GB of RAM on this system. I'm already skeptical about going that high but RAM prices are pretty cheap now.

Whats the RAM cap for standard Windows XP? I can't remember.

Right now, I'm running the 2x2 set in XP. My system shows 3.25GB of RAM. I'm not sure how much it caps out at. It's always nice to have the 4GB incase of an upgrade.

Sorry, caught my stupid self there. What I meant was are there any advantages or disadvantages to running 4x1GB sticks vs 2x2GB. The 4x1GB is assuming I start with 2 and add another 2 down the road.

The 2x2GB stresses the board less than the 4x1GB sets. That's why alot of members suggest using the 2x2GB sets.

So true.

I've been running 4x2 GB on three different motherboards now.
P965 Asus P5B Deluxe
P35 DFI UT P35-T2R
P45 Asus P5Q Deluxe.

Trust me, if you seriously overclock your system, especially RAM, you do not want 4 dimms.

I do because i want 8 GB...but if i could get 2x4 GB that clocked almost as well, i'd be all over it

Cool, thanks for the help. Looks like I'll be getting the 2x2 but I have to order from NCIX since Newegg doesn't ship to Canada

Looks to be the same:
