Steam memory read error.

So, I decided to let give the HL2-SMOD a go-around.

the game launches, the Valve splash screen is displayed, and the loading screen appears. After several seconds the game crashes to the desktop and I get this error:

the instruction at "0x24516a67" referenced memory at "0x0e60f41c". The memory could not be "read".

(numerical values vary from crash-to-crash)

I also tried HL2, HL2-E1, FakeFactory, and Lost Coast that resulted in the same result. Portal however does launch to the main menu, however I did not launch the game as I merely wanted to see if it would crash too - it did not.
  • Steam platform is up to date
  • Directx 9c
  • I do not have the latest Nvidia Drivers

I removed the RAM, and cleaned the pins and the slots - still fails.

All other games that I tried (Civ IV, Gow, Bioshock, Crysis, Sins of a Solar Empire, blah, blah, blah all work).

Halp?

Going by memory, I recall a thread that stated much ram is needed for that mod.

Hey Grunion.

The Fake Factory mod is the earlier version, it's that darn V7 (I think that is the version) that requires memory-galore.

All of the games and mods that now fail used to work... now I dunno what to do.

I poked around the Steam help-area, but did not come up with anything conclusive.

I may have to e-mail Steam to see if they have a solution.

Hmmm... perhaps I should backup my gaming data and re-install Steam?

Seems to be kinda overkill, but in all honesty I don't even know where to start without burning it down and starting again...

...I am attempting to avoid nuking Steam and re-building.

So now I have also:
  • Updated the Video Drivers to version 175.16
  • Reinstalled RivaTuner v2.09
  • Ensured that XP is completely up to date

Then I tried to play random Steam games in the following configs:
  • No LCDStudio, RivaTuner, Speedfan or any other stuff of that nature.
  • Avast deactivated

...oh joy!....nada.

Still launches and displays the Steam splash screen and then goes to the "Loading..." screen for about 15-20 seconds... then, dzzt! crashes to the Desktop and displays that cheery message about not being able to read memory.

I'm borked...huh?
