But my question is regarding Quadfire..... you can do 1x4, 2x2, etc. But there's also the tri-fir... 2 crossfire + 1 for physics. Which means, can you do QuadFire with 2x 4870x2 and add on 4870x2 for physics ? overkill but, even a 4850, will it sees it, since the limit of crossfire is 4 gpu..

The limit for CrossFire rendering is 4 GPUs, that's the key. I think theoretically, if they aren't being used for rendering, you can have as many GPUs just doing GPGPU stuff as you want since that doesn't necessarily use CF.

Whoops, I meant OctoFire.

Ahh, I thought that it did that last gen, and some of the improvements of this new PLX chip was that it would do all the inter-GPU communications work, so the OS addresses it as one GPU.
