Primer Question.

post #1 of 8

So i've decided to paint the inside of my P180 Black, since I replaced the dust filters and the doors that cover them with some modders mesh because they reduce airflow to like 0 but now you can see the horrid grey through the mesh.

Anyway I went out and bought some primer and black paint, just finished priming it 10 minutes ago and it says to leave at least 24 hours before applying the black, my question is does it really need 24 hours? Or would be 5-8 be ok? I'm impatient ;x If it will make the overall finish better i'm willing to wait the 24 hours though.

I believe it depends on the temp. If it's fairly warm, the primer should dry quicker and you should be ok. If it's cooler, you should let it dry for 24 hours.

It's pretty warm but breezy outside I have the HD cages hanging on the line It seems to have dried pretty fast but I think I will wait untill tomorrow, if it ends up looking crap I won't be able to live with it and will end up having to do it again D;

I have 0 experience painting btw, should I bother with a clear coat?

If you got glossy paint, it's not necessary. You can always paint it, then make the call when your done.

I couldn't decide between matt or gloss, I was stood stareing at them for a good 10 minutes ;l So I went Satin! I'll just see how it looks when it's done.

if you have a heat gun you can use that as you spray to dry the paint almost as soon as it is sprayed

the cans of paint themselves will say how long to wait between recoats or top coats. I know you said the primer says to wait 24 hours, if it does then i'd follow what it says, impatient or not. Painting too soon will ask for the paint to not seal. I use Krylon primers and paints so far, and I can prime coat every few minutes, then let it stand for like 20 minutes, then paint coats of color every few minutes. Before applying any clear coats wait 24+ hours. Krylon primer on the can says "recoat or topcoat any time", so I usually give it 20 mins before color

There's a big difference between "dry to the touch" and "completely dry". If you don't wait the recommended time, the paint may mix with the not-yet-completely-dry primer and cause finish problems, since they are actually two different types of paint.
