Changing graphics settings requires restart?

Thread Starter
So, recently after installing the newest drivers for my GFX card, my computer started acting up. Everytime I would start a game that changed the resolution, it would crash at the pregame loading screen. Anytime I would try to change the display settings (resolution, color quality, etc.) it would give me this message:

I usually don't have to restart to change any of these settings, and I don't think anyone else has to (or will have to in the future).

Once I restart, it remains in the previous resolution, but when I change it, it works the way it should. Then, I played some Half-Life 2 and when I exited, it remained in the 800x600 (yeah crappy I know) resolution without automatically changing back. This is where I am now, stuck in 800x600 hell with a 17" monitor.

I would really like to not have to restart every time I play HL2, or any res changing game for that matter.

Any ideas, Thanks!
