find a old computer. take off the heatsink on the gpu or cpu, then scrape the stuff on the heatsink/cpu/gpu and apply on your HEATSINK! lol... (emergency only!)

I still think there is an error in the heatsink mounting - I/E, it's not making full contact with the die.

Its possible that you put on to much... the cpu die on a XP is pretty small... at least my barton didn't have an IHS (integrated heat spreader)... i think 2 grains of rice is probably to much. You might just try taking it off, cleaning it, and then re-seating your heatsink.

If it's a new heatsink make sure you took the plastic thing off on the bottom of it.

try the reseating first (cheaper), and if you need to, get someone with steady hands to help you out. Oh, and look in your bios to see what the Vcore is set at... i saw this happen to someone else because the vcore was WAY to high. so try checking that too. stock vcore on a 2600 is 1.65v.
