conky in ubuntu

Thread Starter
I supposedly have it installed but I see few signs of it . . the folders are there when I search and when I type "conky" in terminal i get:
Code:

dannebtd@dannebtd-laptop:~$ conky

Conky: missing text block in configuration; exiting
I have no .conkyrc file on my system and from what I have read that is the file I need to modify the settings in. I am obv. a linux n00b and could use some help on this issue. could someone please guide me how to get conky onto my system and to the .conkrc file . . Ill try to take it from there.

also I seem to have lost my compiz "advanced appearence" or w/e its called under the menu. does anyone have the terminal line for the option/setup menu .. . . I am trying to learn the terminal more to become more sufficient and hopefully proficient.

Thanks in advance

You need a conkry file. By default it looks for one in $HOME named .conkyrc.

Here is what one of my old ones looked like. You can go to the conky site to see what all the variables mean.

# set to yes if you want Conky to be forked in the background
background yes

use_xft yes
xftfont Fertigo:size=9
xftalpha 0.8
out_to_console no
update_interval 2
total_run_times 0

own_window yes

# normal, desktop, or override
own_window_type override
own_window_transparent yes
own_window_hints undecorated,below,sticky,skip_taskbar,skip_pager

double_buffer yes

draw_shades no
draw_outline no
# draw borders around text
draw_borders no
# draw borders around graphs
draw_graph_borders yes

stippled_borders 5
border_margin 4
border_width 1

default_color 8C8C8C
default_shade_color black
default_outline_color grey

# Alignment
#alignment top_left
alignment bottom_left
#alignment bottom_right
#alignment top_right

gap_x 10
gap_y 10

no_buffers no
uppercase no
override_utf8_locale yes
use_spacer no
minimum_size 300

# colors
# baby blue = 0065CA

TEXT

${color 484848}Uptime: ${color }${uptime} ${color 484848} : : CPU: ${color }${cpu}% ${color 484848}[${color } ${freq_g} Ghz${color 484848} ]
${color 484848}/ : ${color }${fs_free_perc /}% ${color 484848} : : storage: ${color }${fs_free_perc /media/storage}% ${color 484848} : : Memory: ${color }${memperc} % ${color 484848} : : Swap: ${color }$swapperc %
${font Serif-size=12}${time %a. %d %B %y} ${color 484848} : : ${color} ${time %I:%M%p}${font}

Just save that to a file in your home directory and name it .conkyrc
Then you should be able to start conky up from the terminal.

try uninstalling conky

Code:
sudo apt-get remove conky
seeing as you say you have no .conkyrc file there is no need to delete the config files, but if it doesnt work on the 2nd install maybe your config files are corrupt or missing, try this so remove them (if they even exist)

Code:
sudo apt-get remove --purge conky
then reinstall the same way

Code:
sudo apt-get install conky
here is the conky file i used here. I just edited it a bit for me (got rid of audacious support etc)

enjoy
