My TRUE lapping adventure...

Thread Starter
So I ended up lapping both my TRUE and Q6600. Was originally only going to do the TRUE, but lapping was actually easier than I thought. It's a PITA though. Took me forever to get both the TRUE and cpu flat. I'd say a good 3hours on 180 grit. Subsequent grits were a lot easier. I went 180, 220, 400, 600, 800, 1500. Both the TRUE and cpu were very convex. I also added the washer mod.

So...to what everyone cares about, RESULTS!

Well, I'm glad to report my results were exactly right inline with what others predicted.

Ambient - 23c-24c, Q6600 G0 @3.6ghz - 1.38v (no vdroop), Prime95 1hr

Before mods:
72c
72c
63c
63c

Lapping + Bearing + Ultra Kaze 2000:
61c
61c
58c
58c

Delta:
11c
11c
5c
5c

Overall very very satisfied with the results. Also good to see my core temps evened out to within 3c. I was really only expecting about 5c across max. I figure I could squeeze even more out of it since I think I put on too much AS5. I applied maybe a little more than a grain of rice, but looking at people's pics who've lapped, they only used a tinny dot of AS5 after.

Sorry, I don't have any pics. Not really wanting to prove anything, just wanted to share some results.

Big thanks Robilar and Adrienspawn for their recommendations!

Aww, hell.

This thread just reminded me that I haven't lapped my new Q6700 yet!

Had it over a month and it's still not lapped.

(man. I'm slacking!)

Sorry, I meant washer. The washer mod is for the TRUE. I placed a metal washer under the bracket to increase the pressure between the TRUE and the cpu. Not sure if you can do that with the Zalman.

below ambient? If you're referring to the delta, that's the improvement I saw across the cores after all the mods.

lol I don't blame you. Took me long enough to get off my arse and lap the two. I really didn't want to spend hours lapping to only see a few degrees improvement. I thought 10c difference would be quite rare or a little exagertaed since most skeptics say i'll only help about 3c. Was a PITA and I have a million cuts on my hands, but definitely worth it
