Now a team of researchers at the Tohoku University have discovered a new way of storing the data on a DVD, which enables us to store what amounts to nearly nine discs of data on just one. They say a V-shaped pit can hold as much data as 2^9 flat pits, which means there’s the potential for a disc that can store up to 42 GB of data.

If they can do it with a current burner or a new burner for ~$25 like the ones out now, I'd hop on that for storage way before Blu-ray. Why bother with crazy expensive media when DVDs are so cheap?

As far as I know this could be extended to BluRay discs.

It's not like BluRay is a whole new paradigm for storage. It's still an optical disc; they just use a different laser.

I already want to see the end of optical media. Flash memory is becoming cheaper every day, a 4 GB flash card these days can be obtained for the same price as a new release DVD.

So things like vido games would be released on flash memory devices. Who would have thought of that.

Yeah why not on a 4 GB SD card, put it into SD reader and play, just like a cartridge.
