sapphire X800GTO r480

Thread Starter
Greetings.

This is my 2nd post on this great site I stumbled upon this evening.
My name is LEE and am interested in flashing my gpu bios. I've read some threads about the process in some older threads but I am not sure on the exact process in which to accomplish my goal.I know , green-noob...
About a year ago I thought about flashing it , but never had the nerve to try it. I'm going to try it now if I can get some help.

I checked the core with ATitool and it shows that I have the r480 core with 12 pipes.
CONFIG_DIE_FUSES......................0xFFFFFFFF
CONFIG_SUBSTRATE_FUSES..........0xFFFFFF9F
CONFIG_ROM_FUSES.....................0x261

I know the card will unlock to 16 pipes.
What I am in need of is a step-by-step process in which to do it (and a kick-in-the-butt to get going...). So far I've formatted a floppy to be an MS-DOS start up disk.

I'll pull the Arctic Cooling ATI Silencer off tomorrow and check the ram(1.6 or 2.0) & verify that I have an un-cut r480 core. I tried to do that tonight but It'll have to wait as I'll need some new thermal tape as removing the cooler will trash the pads.

It's overclocked w/ATItool to 545.5/560.25 with no artifacts. Default clocks are 400/490. I've pushed it further but didn't like the xtra heat.

Thanx...

LEE

http://forums.techpowerup.com/showthread.php?t=369 one method.

http://www.techpowerup.com/articles/...ng/vidcard/127 another. I have an r423 that I did this too. Ask Dolf I know he has made iso's which run an automated flash. Also if you oc your card consider getting better cooling.

Well , according to Atitool , I should be able to unlock my 4 pipes but upon numerous attempts at flashing the bios , failure...

I ran < flashrom -i > and this is what it told me:

bn : 01
dn : 00
diD : 5D4F
asic : R423
flash : -
Id : -
Flashtype : ST M25PO5/C
remap : -
lock : yes
ROM size : 00x10000

< atiflash -i > gave me this :

adaptor bn dn diD asic flash ROMsize test bios p/n

0 01 00 5D4F Rialto M25P05/C 10000 pass 11x-cc661ASA-00

1 01 00 5D4F RV423 M25PO5/C 10000 pass 11x-cc661ASA-00

I tried all the bios versions for the agp 800/850 @ the techpowerup data base. Nada.
Yes , I re-named them to have 8 or less digits.
I tried Rolf's and even modded my own with hed /RaBit...

Is there something I'm not thinking of or am I just S.O.L. ??

you said for sure its an r480? Your id is for an r423 which were also unlockable (I have one). They don't nescesarily clock as high as the r480 but they were a might powerful chip in there day. I have an iso file buried in another PC, but dolf wrote it for me. It might still be available in a link somewhere in a techpowerup forum. Go to the ATI graphics forum and do a search for your exact brand of card and see what others have posted. Your fuses are the correct ones for flashing to 16p. There is an X800XT(r423) bios in the database but you also have to have matching memory. Your looking at having to remove your cooler for positive id on the die. Write down the numbers off the die and ram. If you flash the wrong bios you could bork your card.

I have an X800GTO AGP in my closet that came with the 16 pipelines unlocked, but I don't know what BIOS it has since it came unlocked. It was a Sapphire so you might have some luck looking for some Sapphire BIOS.

I have my card oc to 545/570 at present for the gaming profile through Atitool. It OC's like an r480 but won't unlock for some reason.

Atitool states that I have a 12 pipe r480 core but the flash utilities state it as r423.

Maybe the Rialto chip is confusing Atitool ? I was planning on removing the AC cooler today but I was not going to town for thermal tape w/ gas being $4 +. I'll know more when I get some thermal pads to replace the ones I'm going to trash.

The thermal pads on the heat ram heat sinks have a death grip on the ram. I'll have to pry them off which will trash 'em so I need replacements before I pull the cooler off.

Mine overclocked to 540/560, pretty high for an r423 with the slower ram than the r480 based cards. The r423 is a good gpu, with those clocks you could flash a XTPE bios. Your best bet is to post your cards original bios in one of those threads and ask someone like Dolf to make a automated flash iso that you can burn. Include the name you want and clocks you feel comfortable with. DOS is the best way to flash but any misstep can cause it not to work. ATIflash keeps the old bios settings so an unlock would not work. Its DOS only FTW. Ask Dolf real nice and be patient as he is usually pretty quick to respond unless tied up. Make sure you have all the info from die and ram. I also have an ATIsilencer on mine, with AS5. Use 70%+ alcohol for cleaning off old TIM.

edit: forgot the alcohol.
