40% seems like the sweet spot to me. Can't hear the fan and it idles at 48c! Even cooler than my 8800GT was in the past couple weeks (2-3c cooler).

I tried the fan at 65%. Talk about a lawn mower
post #15 of 50
Anybody tryed leaving it set to auto and bumping the target value up to say 65%...

If I monitor GPU-z I notice it dynamically adjusting the fan speed according to temp (or load unsure of which)

Which means we might (I am guessing here) up the target speed... the max temp might change (lowered) without affecting idle noise (on this note the idle temp would stay the same as stock)?

Here is a copy/paste for the ones that can't get the link.

Make a profile in the CCC after turning on Overdrive and make sure clock and memory settings are correct.

For Vista

Then go to the following location and open the following file for editing "C:UsersYour Windows IDAppDataLocalATIACEYour CCC Profile.XML. The xml file will have the same name as the Catalyst Profile you saved. right click and hit edit.

For XP - Thanks Spartan for the path...

Then go to the following location and open the following file for editing "Cocuments and SettingsYour Windows IDLocal SettingsApplication DataATIACEYour CCC Profile.XML. The xml file will have the same name as the Catalyst Profile you saved. right click and hit edit.

Now go down the page until you see the following lines in the XML file ...

<Feature name="FanSpeedAlgorithm_0">
<Property name="FanSpeedAlgorithm" value="Automatic" />
</Feature>
<Feature name="FanSpeedRPMTarget_0">
<Property name="Want" value="0" />
</Feature>
<Feature name="FanSpeedPercentTarget_0">
<Property name="Want" value="23" />

Change the "Property name="FanSpeedAlgorithm" value=" from "Automatic" to "Manual"

Then change "Property name="Want" value=" from "23" to your desired fan speed.
Save the file then reload the Profile you just edited in the CCC.

You will have to select the profile everytime you re-start the computer.

Edit:

After experimenting with my HIS HD4870 I found a fan-speed of 40% works best for me. My temps went from 79C at idle to 49C.

Backed off to 35% @ 48C

So actual numbers

I set fan speed to 50% which is currently nice and quiet...

Temps were 66c/82c with the "hot fix" which did not fix much.

With this new 50% fan speed I am getting 44c/71c so that is 22 on idle drop and 11 on load drop... (Oh yea I am now OCed too so Not sure what full drop was but enough)...

Give this a shoot!
