[Yahoo!] Scientists create atom-smasher machine - Page 7

A couple of things for those who are unsure what LHC is supposed to be and/or do...

(1) LHC or Large Hadron Collider is an elementary particle (hadron) collider, or simply, a particle accelerator. In this case, the elementary particles being protons. Think of it as a giant speed-circuit for elementary particles
(2) The LHC device accelerates protons to a very high speed and then collides them. Because of the (proportionally) immense energies involved in those collisions the scientists are hoping such collisions will create new, never before observed particles.
(3) There are several particle colliders already in place around the world that have been working for many years. This one just happens to be much bigger, more expensive, and is supposed to collide particles at much higher energies.
(4) Strange matter is something that has never been observed or proven. In fact, it is a very weak theory AFAIK.

What happens as the result of it, well, that remains to be seen. I'm pretty sure though that if all matter converts to strange matter or gets sucked into the black hole we will not be aware of it...

I do however doubt this is likely to happen. I also very much doubt that the results of this experiment will be as ground-breaking as some particle physicists are hoping it will be.

Just my 2c.

Others have all thought that the second it's turned on, we'll all just cease to exist because of a worm-hole or something... Isn't this exciting?
Yeah... Can't wait to see what happenes...

Now in the meatime... Top Gear is on the TV.

So what if there was similar experiments. This will be on a totally new scale , you believe the spoon fed that CERN is telling you.

Hmmn, This is launched around the same time Blizzard releases the Sunwell patch for World of Warcraft, which has some giant alien killer thing coming through a portal...

COINCIDENCE? I THINK NOT!

It's going to be ground breaking, just not to average Joe Blow, that is unless the Combine comes rushing out of the dimensional rift it creates.

Ha I read "atom smasher" and when I saw the picture I immediately thought "why is it so big?"

This is pretty awesome. And that comment #30 by Risingpowers made my day.

If only I had enough money to launch a space shuttle a day before this happens. I sure as hell dont want to be on earth when they flip the switch. Hopefully a gordon freeman will rise up and liberate us from the combine hordes.

I think all of this hype is just to worry people. They'll turn it on, it'll make a noise like an old hard drive combined with the dial-up ring tone and spit out a bit of paper telling us that we've just spent 30 years worth of tax on one of these.

At least when the Combine do come, there will be thousands of gamers who upon completion of Half Life 2 are now trained freedom fighters with the precise knowledge required to eliminate the Combine threat.
