if you mean by dual core {pentium d} you are totally wrong

My vote goes to the X2-5000.

I had a BE-2350 overclocked to 3.1Ghz and it outperformed my E2160 at 3.1Ghz, the e2*** are rather crippled by having most of their cache removed.

It wasn't until I got my E7200 that I got a performance boost.

It would probably change because the multiplier is locked by the CPU and not the motherboard

Either one of these chips would be fine IMO, though I would tend to choose the 5000BE because you wouldn't need to change the mobo.

Benchmarks? I have my E2160 at 3.4Ghz for benchmarking and I don't think too many AMD X2's could outperform it.

Ummm I'd have to steal the AMD from my ex girlfriend and rebuild the e2160 rig...

I'll get back to you on that...

I'd say get the x2 5000 BE. I have it in my parents pc, and its currently OC'd to 3.0 w/ temps of 33C idle and 42C load.

Intel Dual Core series CPU on Newegg (2160, 2180, 2200)

Intel Core 2 Duo Series on Newegg

Anyway, I would say get a BE, since he already has the MoBo, he can just change the Multi without needing to change the voltage like you do with the FSB.
Just check GB website to see if it is supported (they all should with a BIOS update).

Hmm... Update, for budget purposes, I think he's going to end up getting a 5600+ (2.8Ghz) w/ no OC, buy new RAM + video card...

Anqt31 -- HOW DID YOU GET A 4200+ TO 3.312gHZ??!?!?!!?!

The chips performance are similar (I would say the E2xx series has slight advantage) but the Intel chip will most likely clock higher with less voltage.

My wifes E2160 is stable 3050MHz on stock vcore (GA-P35-DS3L)
My X2 3600+ is stable 2850MHz on 1.44v (TF8200 A2+)

If I remember correctly, the 2160 scores about 700 points higher on Passmark Performance Test (CPU tests only)
