Looking better all the time. I hope it's just not hype. I guess we'll all know before too long huh?

I'm not really sure what you mean... the 3870X2 was brilliant compared to Nvidia's dual gpu solution. With a better bridge, it has to be at least really good, if not amazing.

It destroyed nvidias I know. I'm not saying it was bad, but I felt it could have been much better. I just wasn't all that impressed when I was running Quadfire.

lol no i know what you mean. i remember the Hd2900. my mate grabbed one as soon as they came out, found out the hard way it just didnt compete. i had the 1Gb version for a while, but back then i was into Lost Planet and as soon as i saw that card perform under Lost Planet, and it couldnt even render the fur setting in Dx10, i sold it.

i had a 3870X2, but due to a fault of my own, killed one of the cores, so i have a bad taste left in my mouth from them too. was only 2 weeks old.

having said that, the 4870 on its own sounds awesome, and Robilar has a good thread going with his own personal results, which i would also take over a review site any day.

AMD could go two different ways here: They can price it at around $550 so that it is still a bit cheaper than the GTX280 but would perform better and they would probably be able to finally build up some cash flow. Or they can price at right under $500 so that it would completely starve sales of the GTX280. They would generate a ton of sales of the 4870X2 but they wouldn't make as much profit.

Either way, it seems like AMD finally got it right this time around.

Starting the pricing at the $550 mark would be the smart thing to do. For one, they'd get some much needed income, and at the same time they are still offering MORE performance for LESS money and nobody can argue with that. I think even at this price point it's still going to really cut off GTX280 sales except for the most loyal Nvidia enthusiasts or those looking to go Tri-SLI (wonder how this will compete with 4870x2 QuadFire), but this is going to be such a small miniority of people that it really won't make a difference. Nvidia's only real choice will be to drop the GTX280 price to a point where they will barely make up for the manufacturing costs. Even in this situation if ATI is inflating the 4870X2 price to get more profits, they're going to have plenty of room to drop it to stay competitive. Even if the GTX280 gets close to the HD4870 in price, judging by the price of the HD4850, ATI has some room there too.

Nvidia played right into AMD's hands this round, and GT200b isn't going to change a whole lot, just look at the 9800GTX+. Even with the die shrink + higher clocks, in the games it does manage to pull ahead of the 4850, the margin is so small it's laughable. Sure it will improve yields slightly, but the only thing that will do is allow Nvidia to retain at least a portion of their profit margins. AMD really seems to be holding all the cards at the moment, and it doesn't seem like there's anything Nvidia can really do about it.

Actually, I am quite pleased with my purchase. I paid less than $600 for two, I can put aftermarket cooling on them (once I decide on something), I can sell them off separately when I upgrade again, and I will not spend over $1000 on video cards (Assuming 2 4870x2's).

Not to mention they work really well. If we always waited for the next thing that is the "best", none of us would have computers...

I learned a valuable lesson holding off on buying the nvidia GX2's (which were a dissapointment).

Perhaps ATI will provide a faster onboard interface, or maybe it will be about the same. Time will tell.
