Q6700 - edge of stability

Thread Starter
Hi all

just thought I would share with you what i am seeing ,
I have a Q6700 g0 with a VID = 1.2625v.

I am 4 hour occt & 24hour prime stable at 366 x 10 with a vcore of 1.4250 (1.41 vdroop)

if I even add 1fsb it will crash occt and prime and when I say crash I mean reboot the pc.

temps aren't a problem as it is under 59c .

and I then need a stonking 1.5vcore to get occt or prime to run for more than a few mins
and even then 'reboots r US '

this seems to happen irrespective of FSB and multiplier
on the q6700 if end frequency is around 3.6ghz ok any more reboots
on the q6600 same thing with 3.45ghz

not code failures in occt or worker thread failures but reboots

Is this what othere people see ??

I have had this now on 2 chips a q6600 g0 ( vid=1.2825)and Q6700

is this what other people see ???

I am sort of wondering if is might be my mobo

come on you gurus give a fustrated geek a hand

Sounds like a north bridge or vtt(fsb termination) voltage issue. Does that board allow you to adjust those voltages?

I have found this with mine.

At 3.6... any thing else within my cooling limits is not stable.

yup I have 1.4, 1.6 , 1.7v on the fsb term
and 1.55 and 1.7v on the NB , I have tried 1.7 on the fsb term ,
which seems to make no difference and things didn't like the 1.7 on the nb

your up early in virginia ???

man between the crappy bios and this stubborn chip I could really SCREAM some

bios is refusing to see x 8 and x9 multipliers , as soon as it goes to 10 it is happy

The lower multipliers, say 6x,8x,9x help a lot when you're doing high FSBs... you should try something like 450x8 instead of 366x10, and pump some voltage to your northbridge, and up the FSB termination volts a little, if your board lets you fine tune things like this. Higher bus speeds will get you a faster system overall than keeping a lower FSB with a high multiplier...

From the look of things, the Q6700s seem to hit a wall around 3.6GHz...

I definitely agree with you about the 3.6 wall. I have gotten my system to boot at 4.0GHz, but can't get anything above 3.6 to stabilize. I did get 3.85 to stabilize enough to run benchmarks, but no matter what voltage I go to, it won't run Prime95 more than 5 or 10 minutes without rebooting. I have tried voltage all the way up to 1.56 and no good. I really don't get this, it seems to hate the FSB being pushed at all between 360 and 400.
Finally...

1.2825 is a REALLY high VID for a G0... I have the exact same VID on my 6700 as you do, and yes, I'm running into the same things. Lower your multi, put the FSB over 400, and it will stabilize...at least better than what you're seeing. You will need a large amount of voltage added though, the FSB heats up like the sun too. Over 400 FSB, I get about 61 high temp under load...and that's with water cooling. Presently I am this >< close to stabilizing at 3.85GHz. If I could keep windows from freaking crashing...
I get the same thing, reboots or BSOD. I don't understand it myself.
