Q6700 - edge of stability - Page 2

My Q6700 pretty much maxes out at ~ 3650 MHz, but that's with far too high vcore IMO.

I run ~ 3.5 GHz 1.4v, as to get much farther stably i need a ton more vcore, & there's not much point just to get an extra 100-150 MHz.

Thanks guys , I thought I was going out of my mind with these chips,

I have been chatting with a guy from xylinx at work who used to work for intel ,
he says you are probably seeing the 'volume ramp up'

the first few 10000 odd wafers will be produced with a high quality and high quality inspection ,

after this they sort of turn the production settings down to reduce costs so the wafers are of less quality ( still pretty high though ) and so faster to produce and cost less.

so the moral of the story is the first batches will always be better than latter batches
so get your chip early for a better overclocker

ah well I should be happy with a 40% overclock

just my crappy asus bios is rejecting the 8x and 9x mulitpliers
I got it to to run a 456x8 last night for a 10 hour blend at 1.42vcore but it was frozen when I came back to it this am

Interesting! I thought it was only myself experiencing the 3.6GHz wall with the Q6700...

if your board rejects high FSBs, try upping the northbridge volts more once you have your Vcore high enough...

it isn't the fsb I am now having a problem with it is the bios not allowing me to change the multiplier . most times I set it to x9 or x8 and save the bios it reboots saying I have an invalid overclock !!!!

occasionally it works I had 8x455 work for 2 hours with a vcore of 1.4125v then went into the bios and upped the fsb to 460 and vcore to 1.425v and it rebooted with an invalid overclock

as soon as I put it back to a x10 it is happy
I think my bios may be a tad flaky
I have removed the battery all day today and will re-flash it tonight if it still happens after that this board is going back .

Thanks for this thread. I've hit a wall at 3.4GHz. Over Clocked with ease to 3.3GHz. This could just be my own inexperience also, but I see others have hit a similar wall. Killbot, I'd be happy with 3.6GHz!! I'll trade ya!?

hey Jonny , yeah it seems real odd with these chips ,
I did get s sort of explanation off a guy who worked for Intel

basically after a certain amount of time Intel relax their quality settings at manufacture of the wafers ,
so basically they cut the cost of the wafer which cuts the quality :swearing:

still getting 40% extra out of a chip is pretty good .....

but I am still wanting to squeeze that extra bit
