This means, with a 255.255.255.192 netmask for example, you can set up IP addresses in the range of 10.0.0.2 through 10.0.0.62
My subnet mask is 255.255.255.0, in my router and ipconfig /all.

I set my IP to 196.168.0.*** which was comparable to what was listed in ipconfig /all.

ipconfig /all lists:
IP - 196.168.0.***
Defauly gateway-192.168.0.1
DNS Server-192.168.0.1

Router's page lists:
IP-192.168.1.*
Defauly gateway-192.168.1.1
DNS Server-202.54.29.5
Seconday DNS-202.54.12.164

When I first setup my static IP address, I used values comparable to the Router's info, like IP-192.168.1.6 and gateway-192.168.1.1, but that didn't work...

Values comparable to ipconfig /all worked, like IP-196.168.0.*** and gateway-192.168.0.1.

Any ideas....

as far as your speed goes, it's fine... 256kiloBITS = 25 kiloBYTES.. your connection is where it's supposed to be

what kind of router do you have?

so on your PC, set your static IP like this

IP : 192.168.1.206 (choose a high number, this will ensure that your router doesn't try to assign the same IP to another device through DHCP)
Subnet: 255.255.255.0
Def Gateway: 192.168.1.1

then down below, it's important you set the DNS servers

Primary DNS: 202.54.29.5
Seconday DNS: 202.54.12.164

it's ok to tell us what IP your using since it's not a public static IP, it's just an IP you are setting up in your own individual network

if you still have problems, take screenshots (hit the 'print screen' key on your keyboard, then open up MS Paint and paste, then save... then upload image to imageshack.us)

Set your router to 192.168.1.1, set your computer's IP to anywhere out of the DHCP... it can have problems if you gave it a static IP in the DHCP pool. Try 192.168.1.150.

If your default gateway is set to 192.168.0.1 then you set something up wrong... it should be your routers IP.

DNS server should be what your ISP gives you... :
DNS Server-202.54.29.5
Seconday DNS-202.54.12.164
Those.

Router is D-link DIR625

My static IP info is as follows:
IP-192.168.0.126
Subnet-255.255.255.0
Gateway-192.168.0.1

Preffered DNS: 202.54.29.5
Alternate DNS: 202.54.12.164

And yeah, I know how to upload screenshots... look at my sig...

here are the screenshots of before I did anything for the static IP.

ipconfig /all

Um... how do you have a WAN IP of 192.168.1.2 That could be a problem while browsing the internet... Or am I looking at that wrong?

Release and Try to renew your WAN settings for DHCP.

Aaah!

Anyways people, thanks a lot for all the info and help... I need to go now, I'll ponder some more over this later... Maybe after a few months, when I start my 'electronics and communication' major, I'll understand a bit more about this.

In the meanwhile... worse comes to worse, I'll ask our office techie to come take a look. And I'll also contact the ISP and get some more info.

Thanks again...

I've visited there twice... been to the Snake farm, this really famous temple with like elephant sculptures, ruins etc etc. Dorgot its name, starts with a R maybe, like an hours drive from the city, and a few other places... loved the food though. Paper Dosa FTW and the lunch platter is great too.
