Very smart indeed.

now if he adds some gpu's to those quads and starts quad & gpu folding he'll triple his output

As of now, I'm currently GPU2 folding on 3 8800's. I may look into running windows on a flash drive, and put some more 8800's in the rack. I just don't have the extra cash right now. I also want to wait a little for the smoke to clear, see if the GPU2 points are going to stay the same or not.

Call me stupid or whatever.... but NOT selfish. Are there any benefits to folding? I know that this contributes to research at a uni in the US. Is it worth having yourself 5 or more expensive computer systems just for the sake of folding?

I have gone on the website and read about it but some of the people here are like fanatics to the max so I guess this is a good place to start asking.

I am also expecting there to be a flurry of replies and hopefully not any backlashing lol.

EDIT: Is there a benefit to having so many systems compared to an absolutely kick-ass high-end rig with stacks of upgradability options to boot?

It's kind of 2-fold (excuse the pun please)..

#1. Taeric put together a synopsis of what it is and why/how you should do it.

#2. It's more a sense of accomplishment to the people that do fold. Yeah, a little bit of a competition mind you, but it's all for the cause in the end.

And besides that, Chris has kind of made us know who is #1 lol

{Edit to answer your edit}
It's all about churning out points for the crunching of the protein work units that are assigned. Some 'WU's yield more points. 6 moderately built PCs vs. 3 high-end PCs should yield around the same amount of points.

Rep + for good find.

I know WHY i should fold, just don't know why people so competitive, 5 systems man, unless you are so rich you don't know where to spend your money I don't get why you should spend so much, 5 pretty decent systems would have costed about $5000AUS maybe? That is good money. I won't say wasted as it is for a good cause.

So does anybody know why 5 ok systems is better than 1 uber godly system?

No need to replace the shelves just buy some strips of 1x1 "L Shaped" (metal or alum) and put across the front edge from end to end... It should more than do the job... (It only needs to be attached to the ends of the shelf so no need to remove/disconnect your boards). If the each end is attached to the metal L then the mid will be pushing down while the ends are pulling up keeping the shelf tite to the L and the L keeping the shelf straight.

It's like crack. Once you try it for a while, you get hooked and need the 'high'.

The competition aspect of it kind of drives you to want to do more. Yeah, it's quite easy to go broke buying PC components, but I bet if you asked Chris if he paid full retail for his parts, he'll tell you about the deals that have come about. That's another funny thing because when there's an awesome deal, it's hard to pass up when you think of how your folding efforts will increase.

Me personally, I have 3 Quads & 1 8800GT churning out points (looking to get another VGA to add to the 'farm' as well).

I don't know how this could apply to you, but I'm going to call my accountant & ask him if there's a way I could deduct the utility bill because I am donating to a charity

To be honest, your PC alone could probably do 5000-6000 points per day with 2 SMP & 1 GPU clients. Very worth while to start if you are dedicated enough! Every little bit helps the cause!

How many points do you think I could do with 12 hours a day and how much broadband usage would it take up? Big youtube fan and online streaming... especially in HD
