Take a look at some local hi-fi and mid-fi shops and see what their entry level bookshelves have to offer. spend $400 on monitors and $100 on an amp and you'll be all set. You can alway sadd a sub later.
That is my first recommendation, as well.
You've got quite a budget available and should be able to secure some very nice gear.
However, if you decide that route is not for you, I also suggest the Audioengine A5s for an all-in-one setup.
