Crispy PC

Ok well i needed to post this. My neighbor has or rather HAD a computer that was built by a local shop (Intel Core 2 Duo). He called me over today to come have a look at it apparently from he was saying it was on during a Lighting storm however seeming that nothing else was affected and his surge protector didn't truip i think it was just some coincidence. However upon firs inspection the was a smell of burned computer so i know it wouldn't be good ... i took the cover off to find that his RAM has pretty much burned up and fused itself to his mobo. a light tap to the memory chip caused part of the chip to flake, os obviously something went a rye. I have a feeling that his RAM voltage was way off setting and caused a overload more than a Surge ... I told him to take the box back to the place he got it built at. Now my question is would I be right in saying that it could be more likely a mis setting with the memory over a surge concidering nothing else ouside the memory and mobo was damaged?

well since the RAM was FUSSED to the mobo, I want to side with the storm. Because I don't think any computer would ignore the safety warnings that would let the voltage go up that high.

Had to be a surge, because the mobo wouldn't let the volts climb higher enough to fuse like that. Just go into the shop and say the mobo malfunctioned and you don't know what happened.

No chance a setting would cause the RAM to burn like that. the computer wouldnt even boot if it was that high. It was almost certainly a surge of some kind. He probably just has a terrible surge protector.

true story : i plugged in my ram backwards when i was a kid. ya some how the pc was working for 2 straight hours then shuts down... my dad smells a burning smell and he said the ram was fried... we tried an hour or 2 later.... it was still workn.

It was actually a Powertek 450w ... in some cheap knock off RAIDMAX case ... I told him to play stupid and tell the store he doesn't have clue what happened.

Um you cant put ram in wrong their keyed they will only go in the slot one way you probly only had the ram in some not enugh to cause any dammage.

Ya he should play dead cause the storm coulda did it or might not of psu coulda been ready to blow and just happens it did it when it stormed.

My ideas

1. power supply crapped out and overvolted the motherboard by sheer cheap-ness of the PSU

2. some combo of the Surge protector failing to supress in addition to the storm and a crappy PSU caused massive overvolting

3. someone up there has smitten down upon your failing RAM and has ordered you to buy something worthy of a sacrifice.

I think its either of the first two.. the 3rd is just speculation
