Which system is better for gaming?

Thread Starter
My current system now has 2 gigs of ram.....

I have another 1 gig of ram that would drop my FSB to 400, thus making my CPU run at 2.8 GHz.

So CPU @ 3.15 and 2 gigs of ram.....

Or CPU @ 2.8 with 3 gigs of ram?

I play Medieval 2, Bioshock, and some newer games. I realize some older games don't use 2 gigs, so my system now would be faster, but some games do push more than 2 gigs.... Stalker, maybe Medieval 2?

Yep. CPU speed is much more important. Also, 3gb wouldn't be in dual-channel mode.

I have 2GB (2 x 1) now running in dual channel.... The other 1 GB (512 x 2) would occupy the other pair, so I would be running in dual channel, no?

Why would adding another stick of RAM cause your FSB to change at all? Is it that you can't run a stable 400MHz FSB with a third stick?

I really doubt you'd see much of a difference if any. Some might say don't get a third module 'cause then you'll lose dual-channel, but at the very best, I've noticed maybe a 5% difference in dual vs. single channel on my sig rig with the CPU @ 3GHz.

I'd start playing a game and then alt+tab out of a game that you think might be using a lot of RAM, go into task manager and check out how much RAM it's using--I highly doubt a game would use much more than 1GB (I think maybe crysis might come close, and I've seen BF2 go up to 850MB once), but I'd be surprised if total system demand exceeds system resources (you could also disable superfetch if a lot of your RAM is being used in that way.

EDIT--yes, if the other 1GB is 2x512MB, then it'll be dual channel

If you have the RAM, stick it in and see--that's probably the easiest method...

3GB of RAM. You people overestimate CPU speed, and underestimate amount of RAM.

In games its alot more dependant on the GPU than the CPU, and going from 2 gigs dual channel to 3 gigs single channel isn't an improvement
