Motherboards, Motherboards, Motherboards...

Asus, Gigabyte, and DFI Oh My!

I dunno if its just me but in trying to learn which mobos are the ones you want to pick for a future upgrade it makes my head spin.

I know the chipsets (X48/P45 vs 750i/780i if you're Intel) but this also applies to AMD users too I suppose.

What the hell is the difference between the dozens of manufacturer's? I'd understand if there were 10 companies that made entry-level or just plain crappy boards and 2 star performers but from what I can tell DFI/Gigabyte/Asus/Foxconn and even Biostar with their new P45 all make from what I can tell really good boards...

What in gods name does it come down to when you people pick your board?

1.Name (Opting for Asus,Gigabyte,DFI,MSI,EVGA over Jetway,Biostar,etc)
2.OCing Reputation and Stability
3.Price/Performance
4.Features (no. of sata ports, bundled stuff, performance of NB/SB heatsinks, etc)
5.Looks (DFI/EVGA - good, Gigabyte/msi - BAAAAAD)

But when it comes down to it I guess its just reputation? I remember the Biostar P45 board being hyped because someone got a huge FSB on it ... although I couldn't find anyone that had a consistant number for what he nailed.

I can look at boards like Jetway and go "Eww" and thats just common sense...but does the extra price really come down to silly things like SATA ports?

My instincts tell me the boards with the heatpipe heatsinks that cover the NB/SB/MOSFETs are the good kind whereas the kind you see on Jetway's for example are crap

*shrug*

#2 XFX
#3 ASUS

For intel chipset boards

#1 X48
#2 X38
#3 P35

Brand
#1 GIGABYTE
#2 DFI (not #1 because of intense bios not good for rookies)
#3 ASUS

This is just my opinion based on boards ive experienced

hmmm.....
i guess theres a few 'steps' u can go thru to nail down 'the board' that u r looking for.

1. obviously is the choice of what CPU u r going to use. some older boards might not be compatible with 45nm technology.

2. if u're a gamer and maybe considering using 2 video cards now or in the future, then u'd have to choose between SLI or CF compatible boards.

3. (i'll let more experienced SLI users to explain SLI compatibility) but with CF, u can opt for the more efficent 2x16 PCIe lanes mobo (i.e. x38 or x48 chipsets) or you can go for the cheaper p35. or maybe the newer p45 chipsets.

4. decide what RAM you are going to use. DDR2 or DDR3.

5. by now you should only have a handful to choose from. see if the specs of the boards meets your requirements (e.g. RAID feature? overclockability? good onboard sound? ect)

6. ask around in forum and google reviews of the boards that are still in ur list

have fun
