Making the switch Xp x64 to Vista x64?

Thread Starter
OK here's my stance. I just got another 2GB's of ram bringing my total to 4GB, now I'm thinking about grabbing vista. Either way it will have to be x64 because I've grown spoiled by x64 environments. SO my question is, should I stick with XP or "Upgrade" and become a vistard? I'm a heavy gamer and love my old games so I don't want to lose my 32 computability that I have with XP x64's WoW emulator. (no not world of warcraft you nuts.)
I'm currently using XP x64 and LOVE it because I slammed litestep on it.

Thoughts/Opinions.

Also quick question. From what I read about the OEM Clarification. If I have ONE Physical machine that I need to reformat, I can obtain a key for that physical key as many times as I need to as long as I don't replace my motherboard for any reason other then the motherboard is defective and needs to be replaced. Is this true?

To answer your second question, yes (I think). You can use that version of windows for that motherboard, and if it dies you can technically call Microsoft and get a new product key. I think it's considered piracy if you basically just upgrade your motherboard then call MS about it for a new key. I dunno.

Anyway, my opinion on XP x64 is based on things I've heard about it. I've never used it, but I have heard that there are a great deal of driver issues and lack of support. What I would do is just save your settings for XP to another drive, then wipe the drive clean and install Vista OEM. If you don't like it at the moment, you can go back to XP (keeping your XP key valid by not going through the update method in the vista installer), and the vista OEM will still work on your motherboard (I did this over the winter so I know it works without hassle.)

Your choice. I like Vista 64, but I've never used XP 64 so I dunno what it is like.

I've had a few driver issues on obscure drivers ex: My Razr. But other then that, ever since vista was released you'll be more likely to find
Vista -32 -64
Xp - 32 -64
when you dl drivers now.

TBH, I would get 64-bit Vista. I go by the terminology that 2GB of RAM = XP, 4GB = Vista. I know that XP 64-bit has plenty of driver and program support issues, so it's not really worth doing.

Also, you want a 64-bit OS so that you can use all that RAM... So either Linux or Vista.
Blackbox.

I would say, "Go Vista 64". It really is a good OS. I've not had any troubles with drivers thus far.

I can only second what newphase just said. I recently went from XP 32-bit to Vista 64-bit and I must say it's a lot nicer! And faster too.
I only lost about 200 points in 3Dmark06 from stepping over, don't know if it's helpful..

Drivers were only an issue within the first few months of Vista because they weren't made. Now many many more things actually support 64bit and have the correct drivers to do so. I haven't ran into any problems with drivers so far.

I had to move to Vista x64 from XP x64 (because I will be getting dual 4870X2s, not supported in XP), and it has been nothing but a giant PITA. In XP x64, everything just worked. No hardware OR software or driver problems.

In Vista 64, I have two unsigned drivers I have to use = HUGE PITA. I've had problems with CoD4, UT3, my hard drives acting up, diskeeper 2007 not working, magical disappearing hardware, poor interface even with heavily tweaked with the classic interface, and a boatload of other things I don't remember off the top of my head.

Look at the recent threads I've made for an idea of all the trouble I've had with Vista x64.

This guy is just an XP fanboy, one of his threads was about how in Vista there is no drop down menu for selecting months in the date and time settings (you can still easily view all the months, but not on a drop down menu)...oh no!!!!
