Built my AMD/ATI and am not getting what I think I should out of it

So I built my system after putting it off forever, but still had to be very frugal on money as kid no.2 is on the way.

Not that WoW is any kind of performance test, but at any rate I feel I should be getting higher than 30fps in the main city and in raids.

So then something is holding back/bottlenecking.

pieces and parts:

AMD 5000+ (Not black edition, I'm kicking myself enough for not getting it, I don't need you to kick me too)
2gb G.Skill DDR2800 ram in dual channel - 5-5-5-15
ATI HD4850 (newest part and what made me realize something else besides video card must be holding me back)
ASUS M2N-E board
WD 80gb sata 3gb/s (drive is over half empty as I don't use this computer for anything but some games)
Viewing on a Samsung 906BW monitor which runs at 1440x900

I've gone through the bios a few times, everything seems to be in order, I've gone in also and put my windows Virtual Memory to 4092mb to see if that made anything raise.

At this point I'm just guessing, and I don't like that.

HI and WELCOME to OCN
BTW, did you do any OCing and what are the results?
Perhaps some CPU-Z screen shots for a reference please
Also, did you disable Cool N Quiet in the BIOS?
Also, disable anything with the reference to "Spectrum" in it when OCing.

Not sure what the deal is :/ I have a rig with and E6750 in it with a VisionTek 4850 and DDR2 800, and it gets about 30-40 frames in Shatt. My guess is because there are tons of people and buildings to render. Try out Ironforge and see if you get better frames (closed ceilings). As far as raids go.. what raid exactly? 10? 25? It will get anywhere from 35-50 in say... SSC and more frames in Kara. But as far as Mt Hyjal goes, all those trash waves and my spamming seed of corruption eats the framerates. Black Temple varies due to indoor/outdoor bosses + the size of trash waves and Area of Effect spells.

Reinstalling wow could make a difference?

Thanks for the welcome I just joined today, but already feel I've been missing out big time by not being here.

I havn't really oc'ed anything yet, didn't know if it was worth it not having the black edition, and my video card is only a few days old really. Just finally figured out the cooling fan fix to drop it 25 degrees.

Yes, in shatt I sit right on 30 fps, in say IF or anywhere else I'm nearer to 60, is that really a fair limit of my system? I guess I just assumed it'd be able to pull of higher on as simplistic a game as WoW.

On Thunderlord server, my raids would be BT atm, as MH is cleared, and we're apparently not going back until we get council and Illidan down. (to my dissapointment, I need MH loot!) But I do see the AoE vortex at all times as I'm a mage.

Edit: I have the visiontek version as well tindolos. And I am not sure to the status of cool n' quiet right now actually.

Once again, Welcome! This really is a great community. Those frames seem about right to your rig setup!

5000+ BE or not, which run at 2600MHz, there is a lot of room to OC.
I'd venture to say 3G shouldn't be to difficult, but you may need to improve your FHS to keep the CPU full load temps below the mid 50c range.

I got 2 AMD systems. Both 5400+ Brisbane, one with HD3870, the other 9600GT, both CPU OC @3.0Ghz. I don't use them, they are for kid and wife. I'll check on FPS in Shatt once servers are up, and at prime time.

I've never bother checking FPS in WoW since both AMD systems were upgrades from AGP systems, and it was a HUGE improvement for them.

On my system, listed in my spec. In WoW, I unlinked the video sync and get over 60fps all the time, no matter where I go. Resolution is at 1680x1050. Server is a medium RP.

wow is very CPU bound. OCing your processor could definitely help in this scenario. Read up on these forums and soak up as much as you can, watch your numbers rise.
