I know my system has a onboard 5.1 surround sound system, but everytime I plug them in to play any music only two speakers next to each other would work and the subwoofer but the other three speakers wont work any suggestions?

While using my old sound-blaster live.. I had to enable this thing called CMSS in the creative control panel. Look up something similar for your sound card.

Your onboard sound is 7.1, so first you need to to set windows to use 5.1, there should be a "sounds and devices" icon in the control panel.. go there and select 5.1 in Speaker Settings>Advanced>Speaker Setup

The color coding in my sound card is -
Front-Green
Center-Orange
Rear-Black
(Connect the Front in the Green jack on the motherboard and so on)

Those should work for you..

Can you list the manufacturer and model number or passably a link to your motherboard if you have it.

I have these speakers and the only way I can get music coming out the rear ones is to set it in the creative control panel to surrond/move slider, not sure if your onboard has that option?

It's an OS problem, make sure you have the correct jacks in the correct ports. Make sure your creative control panel has the ports congiured as well. If your looking to game, STAY AWAY from CMSS. CMSS Emits the front channels out the rear speakers in addition to the rear sound. Congrats you now have 2.1+ rather then the 5.1 your looking for because your rear speakers are stereo instead of surround sound (and no that setting doesn't go off in games either.) CMSS is great for listening to stereo music out all 4 speakers but nothing else and my z-5500's can do that on their own. I used x-530's until I got my 5500's. Decent system for the price but sound quality lacks slightly in the midrange. Make sure your windows speaker setup is set to 5.1, make sure your creative control panel reflects it and get a game that can test all 5 speakers and the sub. (CS:S Evil Genius; there are a few free programs out there.)
System tasks, music, and other standard non sorround sound applications will only come out the front left, right and the subwoofer for 2.1 until you need 5.1
