Bad XFX RMA experience.

Thread Starter
So about a month ago, I figured out the occasional crashes I'd been getting since building my sig system were from an XFX Alpha Dog Edition 8800gt I got when I first built it. They were just random lockups, anywhere from 1/2 hour to days after turning on the system. What finally clued me in was it started artifacting and crashing more often when playing LOTRO. Anyways I underclocked it at the time and it made the crashes way less common and I promptly RMA'd xfx,and they agreed to fix/replace the card.

Not wanting to go without a video card for a month I bought a ZOTAC AMP! 8800 gt since there was a pretty good deal at the time. I haven't crashed once since getting it, other than one blue screen when trying out some beta drivers, so the video card was in deed the problem. I figured I could SLI the cards when I got the other back so I considered it a decent investment.

Anyways I got the card back today and I was pretty excited to toss it in the system, toss on the sli bridge and fire it up. Much to my dismay, my very silent system sounded like I fired up a wind tunnel in my room. Apparently there fix for the unstable overclock was to make the fan on the card run at 100% speed. Furthermore I can't even adjust the fan speed now, even when it's the only card in. Apparently they either flashed the bios, or hard wired the fan to always be 100%, can't change it with RivaTuner or anything. Needless to say I'm pretty pissed. Just finished writing a nasty letter to XFX through there support page in hopes they would fix it right.

Anyways, has anyone else experienced similiar situation from XFX or any other company. Any clue if they will take it back again and do it right or are they gonna stick me with the super loud card claiming it works now?

If they do try to stick me with it, anyone know if they hardwire it to 100% or flash the bios? I'm assuming hardwire since I can't change it with Riva.

I've been building computers for 20 years, but this card and the motherboard were my first XFX purchases. I always hear they are one of the better companies, but needless to say I'm pretty pissed right now.

Did you get the newer version of the card? If you look at your new card, it probably looks different from your older one. I believe not all the new versions have fan control?

Not sure how to check. You can't even change the new ones with Riva? Defaulting to 100% seems excessive. I assumed they just sent the same card back with the fan on high to make it stable.

Take a picture of the card or find a picture of your EXACT model online.

The product code on it is (PV-T88P-YDD4).

Linking from there site to tiger direct to buy it I get:

http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...P=OTC-CNETFEED

That certainly looks like the exact card as far as I can tell.

I thought XFX's RMA service is pretty decent. Atleast as good as eVGA or BFG.

Hmmmm... that is the stock HSF which has a 3-pin plug for fan control.

I have heard that these models (see below) only have a 2-pin header so no fan control. I guess this doesn't apply to you?

The newer editions of the alpha dog are indeed locked at 100%. Since you had an older model it didnt have that lock on it. This isn't XFX's fault entirely since the stock has pretty much depleted on the old edition alpha dogs. Your only solution is t buy a single slot aftermarket cooler if you dont like the sound, sorry.

The one you linked certainly doesn't look like mine. The fan is in a totally different location.
