Bad XFX RMA experience. - Page 2

So perhaps they used the new bios on my old card and sent it back, locking it at 100%?

Guess I'll have to stick it back in and check what the bios is on it. Anyone know what it should be?

Well can you take a look under the stock cooler and see if it has a 3 or 2 pin plug into the slot. Or what I would do personally is call them and have a conversation with them. I recommend using alot of words and questions to make your point. For instance, asking questions like "Do you think I'm deaf or something? The why would you send me a card that sounds like a jet engine taking off at an airport."

Looks like they stuck one of the new fans in place of the old. Only 2 wires coming from the new one. Sucks for me I guess, but I'll see what they have to say about the RMA before I go replacing stuff. Can't believe they've copped out to shipping 100% fans, that's an insane amount of noise compared to the old one.

+reps coming for those helping me sort this out btw.

Btw, here's my response to the support ticket:
Quote:
[ 7/1/2008 5:40:55 PM] So I was pretty excited to get my 8800gt Alpha Dog edition back from RMA and hook it up in SLI. This excitement ended about the time I pushed the power button. Rigging the fan on a card to run 100% speed all the time is not a fix, it`s a cop out. It`s also too loud to allow the card to be of any use to me. I`ve been bulding computers for 20 years. I wasn`t too excited to have to pay to RMA this card in the first place since it was defective from the time I bought it, but I could live with that since it took me so long to figure out exactly what was wrong with this system. Getting it back with the fan rigged like this is totally unacceptable however, and a slap in the face from what I`ve always heard is one of the best companies out there. I had taken pride in bulding a very silent system, and bought this card after hearing a friends was pretty much silent. When I got it it was fine, to get it back like this is ridiculous. I doubt it`s even stable now for that matter, since you guys probably just stuck the fan on high to make it run cooler, it`s so loud however I can`t stand to leave it running long enough to find out. In my 20 years of building computers I`ve never felt as screwed by a company as I do right now. I certainly hope you will take this card back again, at your expense, and fix it correctly.
Started a bit more harsh, but figured I'd be somewhat nice to start, until they say no or try too. I'll try your suggestion at that point.

Sorry to hear about your issue.

XFX service has been very poor lately, giving folks "special" 8600GTS's in place of 7900GT 's (they claim to have modified them to give them a 256 bit memory bus), giving people 8800GTX's in place of RMA'd 8800 Ultra's.

I think there might be a BIOS that fixes this, but I am not sure.

I submitted a ticket to XFX support about a 7900GT I have that runs at 100% fan speed, it too has only 2 wires. What do I get back? A blank e-mail with 2 attachments, one a picture of an XFX logo, and the other is what I can only assume to be the 7900GT BIOS. No instructions, no info, nothing.

Actually that's perfect. Call them and tell them you want the old stock cooler back and to send it to you. Then you can mount it yourself. If they give you any lip, ask for a supervisor and tell him that you want your old stock cooler back and give him a few choice words. He'll more than likely give you what you want. That should let you alter it because the old stock coolers were 3 pin.

Or when in doubt, fleabay.

[WILLIAM 7/1/2008 9:51:37 PM] Hello Steven, thanks for the message. We didn`t just crank the fan up on your card. The card you mailed into us was serial number IXF193705 and the replacement card we sent you was J1H298787 so its actually an entirely different card. We would never just crank the fan up and mail it back. We sent you the 100% speed card to help in prevention to any future problems. This in fact not a defect but was done in an effort to help our customers. Many customers were a bit concerned with the temperature of their next generation graphics card as they are capable of running warmer then previous generations. To help ensure the longevity of our customers purchase we designed to fan to run at 100% for maximum cooling. If you would like to we can send you another fan that is capable of adjustment, please verify that we have your most current shipping information. Thanks, William.

Hopefully this will end up with a happy ending. I'm amazed they actually responded so quickly. Still annoying that they would just crank them up like that, they have to get a lot of complaints, the noise was crazy. Easily 10x as loud as the rest of my system.

Well I replied asking for the fan, and making sure I wouldn't void the warranty by replacing it, point out I'm A+ certified. If I get it promptly and they don't give me a hassle I'll be happy.

I'm surprised you are having any issues at all with XFX. I just RMA'd my 8400GS that died and they sent my new one out the next day after receiving the old one (and verifying it was indeed toast).
