Unanswered Questions following the Announcement of Diablo 3

So, many many months ago, I had read about job openings on Blizzard's website that were marked as "Top Secret" for a next gen MMO.

Much speculation followed these new job openings, people saying World of Starcraft, a port of WoW, Diablo 3 and the like.

Executives in the company talked about an entirely new non-WoW experience featuring its own engine and graphics system and all. More speculations were made when Blizzard discussed its plans to make a major announcement at its most recent Worldwide Invitational.

As all of you know, this announcement was Diablo 3, so I went to check back up on the Blizzard Employment site..

There are now many job openings for Diablo 3 staff, and Starcraft 2 staff... and there are now even MORE of these job openings for a "next gen MMO".

They are hiring Lead Designers and Artists and all sorts of core employees that are necessary to get a game in development.

Well clearly, this is not for Diablo 3, as they are now seperated from Diablo 3 employment oppurtunities, and are as I said, "core" employees in the pre-production of this new MMO.

So speculation is wild again.. I personal see World of Starcraft coming, being it is almost illogical not to make the game. World of Starcraft has been demanded for by millions now, and would no doubt be the second most populated, if not first most populated MMO in existence (given time). The science fiction field has been very small in the business of MMO's with very few successful MMO's based in science fiction worlds, but why shouldn't Blizzard take one of the top selling video games of ALL TIME, and turn it into an MMO.

It would seem the only other option is the creation of a new franchise.

I can not find the quote, but I remember reading that a Blizz exec had stated this "next gen MMO" was "not WoW related".

Pretty cool to imagine isn't it? World of Starcraft or whatever game in development. I think we can only expect great things from Blizzard.

Most likely it will be unrealted to anything they have. Blizzard can only build so much on there current games, and though I love them all (except WoW), they now that they cant keep progressing story lines forever.

I know everyone hates on wow, but tbh i think its a genious idea.
WoW made MMORPGs accessible to many people, because of their use of the Warcraft franchise. This drew some of the ubernerd stigma associated with prior mmo's like EQ away from the game. In a sense its a brilliant business move. If you look at it, the US economy is taking a crap, yet WoW has more subscribers than ever, and stands to have even more when the newest expansion is released.

If in fact Blizzard rolls out WoS, they will increase their user base exponentially, and would be a great move for them, especially as they can afford to roll out games.

I'm interested to see what the future holds for them

My thoughts exactly. They are one of the greatest companies to watch in the games industry, because they are "revolutionary" in that they have built so much on so little. Publishers like EA and Activision etc just pump out tons of games, many of which flop.

Blizzard spends an epic amount of time and effort into making games that sell and make massive amounts of money. All three of their franchises are among the top games ever made, in terms of profit gained and popularity.

They are a great company, and they legitimately seem to LOVE what theyre doing over there.

And I must admit.. I LOVE WoW. Just because it isn't top of the line graphics and repetitive.. doesn't mean its a terrible game. God knows I love CoD4 and CS:S and other games.. but those are all repetitive too.

Dont get me wrong, im not dissing the company, WoW jsut wasnt my cup of tea. I chose Guild Wars instead and loved it. Im jsut saying you can only take a game so far before the story is boring. You dont see Lucas Arts releasing expansion after expansion, instead they come up with different concepts for Star Wars. Just my thoughts though.

I have never tried Guild Wars. I did see my buddy playing it once, and it looked pretty. They do trials?

And yea.. Ever since WoW came about, I've thought WoS would be the greatest MMO ever, especially if it had very good-looking graphics. I would love to play a Terran Marine, or a Zealot or an Ultralisk or something.

I love the Starcraft franchise most of the 3 franchises at Blizz, but RTS's just aren't my thing. I absolutely love Starcraft, but I anticipate I will play SC2 a few weeks and then get back into WoW. But if you gave me WoS .. I would drop WoW in a second.
