no you dont have to set it every boot up. Because you create a profile in the process of doing this manual fan fix and every time your PC boots up the ATI CCC always enables that profile so it'll always be 40-50% fan speed whichever you choose. Its very quiet btw even with the fan up to that point.

Personally I would go 9800 GTX as the 4850 is not that much better, if we are talking 4870 it would be a different story. I am also a bit partial to Nvidia drivers + CUDA + lower heat output.

I just got a Visiontek 4850, paid $200 for it with LIFETIME warranty.
It does run hot, but a simple script mod that can easily be done will make it run cooler.
Your games will also run A LOT faster from the G80 core you've been using.
4850>9800GTX+

Although they do exchange spaces, the 4850 also still needs driver updates, and should perform even better

As far as I know, the 4850 consumes less power than the 9800GTX. Now where it puts the heat is another story, but more power = less heat and vice versa

If you compare the Idle temps of 4850 vs a G80 8800GTX (I own one) I assure you the 8800 will run cooler. People have been reporting 80c+ load on the 4850 (lucky it does not have the sudden death problem some 4870s have had), even though admittedly people who had 4870s fail were likley pushing the memory too hard. I like the new AMD/ATI cards performance and price but have never really liked the driver suite etc.

That is easily fixed, the stock fan speeds are only at 20%, boost it to 45% and she runs nice and cold.
