you guys think that this laptop could run SolidWorks, a moderate CAD software program pretty well??

pretty much yea, it looks like a high-end system to me, plus GeForce 9500M GS should fully utilize OpenGL. Note that only SolidWorks 2008 and 2009 is compatible with Vista.

On the flipside, 1280 x 800 res. is quite low for CAD stuff IMHO.

Asus does tend to make some good computer products. I would say that from my experiences with cad and Solid Works specifically that when I had an 8800GTX running 2007 Premium on vista x64(xp compatibility mode) the whole SW07 program was very slow to zoom, even turn models.

Further the 8800GTX is 768mb and faster clock speed than the card in that laptop.

There are several used sanger laps one can find on eBay for $400-600 and you can add a much better card that will allow for better cad performance. Once you start using simulation & animation that asus is not going to live up to the task at all.
