Will PCI-Express 1.1 Take Away Performance from the 4870?

Thread Starter
I plan on buying the 4870 soon and I want to know if I should upgrade my mobo to something that supports PCI-Express 2.0? If I was to buy a 4870 now, would I even notice a difference whether it was running on a PCI-E 1.1 or PCI-E 2.0 mobo?

Nope, you'll see no performance hit.

You will be dedicating a full x16 PCIe 1.1 to it so you will be fine.
Once again...

No running in the 16x slot, you will not be bandwidth limited. Only if you run at 8x pci-e 1.1 could you possibly notice any limitation.

But you would see better performance from a 2.0 motherboard.

But does the performance boost justify spending $200+ on a motherboard just to get PCI-E 2.0?

Err I don't see how, if the card can't even use PCI-E x16's bandwidth, what point is there pouring on more?
It's a 4870, of course it can use the full 16X bandwidth.

And yes, it's worth shelling out $200 on a motherboard when you're buying a brand new $299 graphics card.

PCI Express 2.0 has some benifits in its power delivery and latencies. It also has some particular advantages in X48 where all of the links go through the north bridge.

If you want to go CF you will need a new motherboard (GA-P35-DS3R only has 1 PCI-E) then I would recommend going with a X48 that support 32 lanes of PCI Express 2.0 through the NB. However if you already has a motherboard that supported 2- PCI Express 16x I don't think it would be worthwhile.

So in your case, yes, I think it is worthwhile to go PCI Express 2.0

A mobo upgrade for PCI-E 2.0 would not be worth it. Keep your mobo you have its more than enough to handle plus even though you would get a PCI-E 2.0 you wouldn't notice a difference.
