Good Starting Point for first OC??

Thread Starter
My current system is as follows and I want to overclock in order to fully utilize the videocards.

Zalman CNPS9700 CPU Cooler
EVGA 780i
Q6600
Corsair 750W PSU
4GB Corsair XMS2 800mhz DDR2

Is the following BIOS setup a good place to start? Which settings will need to be played with or added in order to achieve a stable OC at 3/3.2ghz.

CPU - 1.4v
FSB - 1.3V
SPP/NB - 1.4V
MCP/SB - 1.525v
HT - 1.25v
AUX - 1.5v (auto)
GTRLEDs - Auto

FSB - 400 mhz
QDR - 1600
Multiplier - 8x

**All Spread Spectrums Disabled**
**HT Multipliers both at 5x**
PCIe x16_3, MHZ - 100
SPP MCP Ref Clock, Mhz - 200

Should this be set to expert with Corsair XMS2 RAM, dont think its SLI ready..
SLI Ready Memory - Expert
FSB - Memory Clock Mode - Linked/Synched
RAM at 800 mhz (5-5-5-18 at 1.9V)

Limit CPUID MaxVal - Disabled
Speedstep - Disabled
CPU Thermal Control - Disabled
C1E Enhanced Halt State - Disabled

Sweet, another prospective OC addict
Hi and WELCOME to OCN
I'll leave the advice to those whom know your chip set since I know little about that particular one.
Enjoy

First off welcome to OCN!! Looks like you've got a decent start so far. Check out this thread for a more in depth guide to getting higher clocks. Be sure to test for stability and watch your temps. If thats a GO stepping cpu your good until 72c under full load. If it's a B stepping I think it's like 60ish.

You can also get the latest P06 bios version here if you don't have it already

How do I know if its a GO or a B? Also how do you know whether to go up or down in voltage and with respect to what item?

Google cpu-z and download the free program. It will tell you what the stepping is on your CPU =P

Up your FSB to 1.4v, everything else looks pretty good. Google prime95 too or search the site here for it if you don't have it. Once you get that run the test using small FFT's and keep and eye on your temps for a while. If your temps are in check and your happy at 3.2ghz run prime95 for at least 12 hours to be sure of a 100% stable OC. Mine failed at 9 hours once. If you want to push it further like 3.6ghz change your multi to 9x and increase your cpu voltage to around 1.475v but check to make sure it's a GO stepping first. B steeping doesn't OC as well as GO and you may have to settle for 3.2ghz. Just pay close attention to your temps if you clock higher than you are now. My temps get around 68c under full load. Leave your memory and everything else alone for now until you have a stable CPU overclock then you can mess with everything else.

Another question came to mind.. why is it that when overclocking the CPU we disable the Spread Spectrums, Limit CPUID MaxVal, Speedstep, CPU Thermal Control and
C1E Enhanced Halt State?

They just tend to mess with overclocks since they regulate power usuage and click speed and stuff.
