Ok well I know alot about computers but I have no idea how to overclock any computer but I just got this new setup and want to know if there is any way to overclock my chip. If so there has to be someone with the same setup that hook me up with a step by step guide on how.

System:

Motherboard: nVedia 790i Ultra
Chip: Q9550 1333Mhz FSB
Memory: DDR3 1066 2Gigs
Cooling: Watercooled "chip only"

Note: if you need any more info please let me know ty.

Thats my sytem it runs great but I want to know if I can push it to 4gigs at 1600FSB I know for fact that my motherboard can hold it but I'm not sure if it can be done with this chip if so let me know. If not then what is the max I can push this chip to run stable and fast I mostly use this computer for gaming I just think that windows should boot faster on reboots and loads and that programs should open up faster as well. If anyone has any details please let me know thank you all so very much.

Have you read the overclocking guide sticky at the top of the forum? Essentially, unlock your RAM so you don't overclock it, nudge the FSB up by 10 and stress test it. When it fails, bump VCore up by a click or 2. It gets more complicated at higher speeds, and there are limits to be aware of (see link in my sig).

You should easily reach 4GHz with watercooling on that chip

Edit: Ok, it may not be that easy (had the wrong chip model in my head), but it's worth a stab. Build up to it though, don't go for it in one hit

Check the other link in my sig for a stress test application - OCCT.
You'll also need CPU-Z, and it is advisable to get something like HWMonitor to monitor all temps & voltages simultaneously.

Read the overclocking guide, it will help increase your knowledge generally!! The step-by-step guide WILL vary from BIOS to BIOS, but the basics are the same (laid out in the guide)

with an alienware system they use a proprietary bios that may inhibit you from overclocking like normal. you have a warranty with them and they don't want you making changes to settings and coming back to them for support.

post a screenshot of cpu-z or a validation link and let's see what clocks you are at stock, you may have some factory oc as it is.

Welcome to OCN and please take a minute to edit your system in the UserCP!
