9800GX2 vs. 9800GTX+ vs. HD 4870 vs. 4870x2

Thread Starter
Hey everyone, I recently sold my 8800gts 320mb from my sig rig so I need a new card. I am stuck between a few. I am willing to spend a little over $300. I can get a used 9800GX2 and a new HD 4870 for around the same price. Which is a better card? Or, should I wait until the 9800GTX+ and the 4870x2 come out? How much are they expected to cost?
Thanks!

9800GX2 is a bit better then 4870 but it will be discontinued soon and dont forget 4870is a new card with new drivers so it will take some time to release its max potential. I say go 4870 since its a single GPU and you dont have to deal with Sli stuff and scaling in games.

I think you should wait for the 4870X2. Should be an awesome card.

The GTX+ is expected to be about 229. As such, it's still a poor value compared to the 4850. 4870x2 is supposed to come out in August, so I'd wait to see performance reports if you can. The cards are getting produced and shipped out in the last couple of weeks in July. However, retail on those will be above your $300 budget ($400 msrp iirc). At that price, I'd easily go for the 4870.

Thanks for the help so far everyone... I guess I am stuck between the 9800GX2 and the 4870 because I cannot wait until August. If I get one of these cards now and decide to run crossfire/quad SLI in the future which would perform better?
Thanks!

my money is on the 4870X2 as well!
double performance (so i have read) and costs less than the nvidia top end cards!

but if REALLY wanting to buy a card like right now...i would prob go for the 4870 if i were you....
the 4870 is the newer card...
its cheaper than the high end 9 series cards...
(remember the 9 series being replaced with the 266 and 280!)

so...4870 i would go for...
AND..if thats not enough for you...Crossfire the 4870!
BUT...doing so will give you roughly a 15% performance when comapred to the 4870 X2!
i would avoid the 9 series...(just my £1 worth of advice)

i am now in a daft situation as well......
do i give my mate money for his un-used 3870X2 at a discounted rate...(which i have borrowed just now)
OR...do a add a few extra quid onto it and get a 4870?!!?

the choices!!!

I say grab a 4850 for a couple hundred and then check out and if the 4870X2 scale 1.8x like they are supposed to then grab one of them. That's my plan, then just crossfire and you have a nice setup that will last a bit.

I have played with the GX2's a bit on a customer rig and Mhill here has a set. They do not provide a great boost in performance in SLI.

One GX2 is fine but if you are planning dual GPU's down the road, go with 9800gtx+ and the sli route or (even better) a 4850 or 4870 for crossfire.

I don't know why anyone is recommending the 4870x2 as from what I have seen, it will be north of $500 when its released (outside your budget I believe).

go with a 4870. it fits your budget, beats the 9800gtx+ by a comfortable margin, and when your budget allows, you can build a crossfire setup.

What resolution are you gaming on?...Mine runs around 22-30fps average on 1680x1050 with almost all very high settings except for physics and sound on med/high.
