Opteron 854 in a 2 way config, need help plz!!

Thread Starter
I recently acquired a pair of opteron 854, 2.8 ghz single cores, and I am using them both in a Asus K8n-dl mobo. The bios shows that both procs are operational and I get temp readings for both... when I boot into XP 32bit Only one of my 854's shows up in task manager, and PC wizard detects only one 854. Why is only one of my new procs showing up in XP? Should I have gotten two opteron 254's instead of two 854's? Does this mean the second 854 is not even being used or is it an illusion?:swearing:

White1Widow, check your device manager and make sure "ACPI Multiprocessor PC" is listed under "Computer".

Let us know

Good luck

White1Widow, that explains why only 1 processor is showing up via Task Manager. The HAL (Hardware Abstraction Layer) is probably still set as Uniprocessor. Below is a possible fix for your issue:

Right-click on "Standard PC" and select "Update driver". On the next screen choose "Yes, this time only" and after that choose, "Install from a list or specific location". On the next screen choose "Don't search. I will choose the driver to install" and click "Next". You should see a list of compatible hardware . Choose "ACPI Multiprocessor PC" and click "Next". This may require your Windows XP CD for installation. Make sure you have SP2 installed as well before doing this.

Let us know if that works.

Good luck

White1Widow, make sure your looking in \\i386 for the .DLL's. Perhaps this Microsoft KB will be helpful: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/309283.

Let us know. The HAL .dll's are located in the i386 folder on your CD.

Good luck

ya that totally clears it up. I think I rememeber forcing the "standard PC" HAL at the time of install because it showed up on the screen and i did not know better. I was trying to load the silicon image drivers at the time also. unfortunately I think that means I cannot revert to ACPI MP PC without a clean install or repair disk. lol, and thats just time consuming.

White1Widow, in most cases you can just update the HAL driver via device manager (which I have many times) but in your situation you may have to perform a full reinstall of your OS. Does anyone else have suggestions for White?

Good luck buddy

yes, a full install is required. Upon loading the install disc and the silicom image raid drivers for this board, windows pretends that there is not a standing copy of XP on the raid volume, It shows up as an empty partition, when i know this copy of widows resides on it... I never should have removed my Hardware raid card lol. Now I have to suffer another install and contacting microsoft to validate the install... Its odd how my pair of opty 246's both showed up in device manager but these 854's do not. I simply thought this would be a plug'n play upgrade to these chips. For all reading this, it is not... However i'm sure a pair of 2.8ghz opterons is worth the trouble.
