Not really. Relatively speaking, a lot of R&D money went into RV770, and the cost of that would already be reflected in the single-card pricing that I based everything off of. The amount of R&D money required to take it from a single-GPU to a multi-GPU card would be comparatively small, and this was one of the advantages that AMD talked about with regards to their "no monolothic chips" strategy.

Even at $500, a good portion of that will probably still be profit because it doesn't actually cost twice as much as a single HD4850 to put two GPUs on a single card. And I use the HD4850 example because the actual GPU inside the 4850 and 4870 costs the same amount to produce.

The 4870X2 is going to be NOTHING like the 3870X2. go read some articles.
ah, actually dejanh is right.

look at the 3870X2. the cores each have 512mb ram assigned to them, for an effective total of 1gb. 2 x 512mb.

while the 4870X2 will be nothing like the 3870X2 in performance, it is still essentially the same concept. its not a dual-core GPU card, its still a simple dual gpu card on a single PCB. i shouldnt say simple, but you get what i mean. they have fused 2 x 4870 cores on a single PCB. each core has a 512mb chip assigned to it. 512 x 2 = and effective 1gb on the card. it is not a single 1GB unit.

and also, i think what they meant by 2gb of DDR5 was maybe 2ghz not gigabytes..could just be a typo.

i've pretty much decided im getting this card, but i dunno how authentic this report is, i feel its just speculation as well.

While I highly doubt it, it sure would be nice to save the money on a new waterblock specifically for the 4870x2 and just get another mcw60. I guess either way I am watercooling it though, so bring on the waterblocks!!

EK made a full cover for the 3870X2 very soon after the cards release, so i'd keep the hopes up that will do something awesome for the 4870X2.

or even DangerDen, since they apparently teamed up with Diamond i think, to release a watercooled 4870.

Aren't they taking the design of R700 to a different level, with a ton of improvements?

The biggest improvement is really the new interconnect and possibly a shared memory system. But, from the beginning of RV770, ATI already knew they were going the mutli-GPU route and so the scalability/interconnect improvements were actually made on the GPU itself (see the memory controller changes from RV6xx to RV7xx, for example). Basically it was designed to be scalable from the get-go and so there really wouldn't be a whole lot they would have to do in order to slap down two on a single board and connect them. This eliminates a lot of R&D costs for having to design/develop for a high-end market since it is already going to be a factor in the price of single-GPU cards.

yeah so they say.

but those improvements might only mean that (for once in their history) they will have full working drivers on launch day... yeah right

plus the scaling of the two cores working in conjunction could work much better than what the 3870X2 achieved. so far, they claim the 4870X2 will perform 15% faster than Crossfire 4870's, a big statement. the 3870X2 didnt perform much better if better at all compared to 2 x 3870's in crossfire. not for a while anyway, until more mature drivers surfaced.
