This card has been on my shopping list for quite some time now. Really looking forward to installing it in my system.

I was considering xfiring 2 of them, but I'd really need to see what kind of real world performance increase I'm actually going to see if I do.

The immaturity of the catalyst drivers is worrying me a little, from what I've heard ATI has been quite poor in this Dept. This is my first foray into the world of ATI, I've had only nvidia cards up till now. I guess we'll have to wait and see.
Well i can tell you now the Catalyst 8.6 Drivers working very nicely under 64 bit vista.

I haven't had one problem they installed flawlessly and have had zero crashes/problems on my Sapphire 4850.

i still think that whoever got this info, got his words mixed up and meant 2gb of ram was 2GHZ of ram..therefore 4ghz ddr5 effective. which is what we were told DDR5 is capable of.

Or they just completely made it up...

I thought GDDR5 was capable of 4.5GHz?

yeah something like that, which would make 4ghz on the 4870X2 totally believable.

or they made it up lol

If this is anything like Crossfire I don't see how you can get 2GB out of the mix. 1GB on each card in Crossfire equates to 1GB total memory, and I don't think this will be any different despite being on 1 card.

This is some junk speculation.
The card WILL retail for $499 USD. The price has been set, and that is it. Both cores will communicate through the vRAM, this will effectively give it a 512bit interface. Since they are communicating through the memory, they will share it! It will have one set of 1GB. Each core will have access to the full 1GB. These things have already been released(the info about how the cores communicate... not the cards)!

Assuming the performance of the 4870X2 should be close to double that of the 4870, it will be faster than the GTX280, no point in selling it less than $600.

I think you will see a $600+ price tag on this puppy. Probably more.
You forget the fact that they only need one PCB and are shooting for a higher market share. They can will sell the HD4870x2 and take not only the performance crown from NVidia, but the market share too. Remember that article a long time ago that in which ATI said they would be getting at least a 40% market share by the end of Q3?

I think they mean price point, not performace.

actually in a few instances the 4870 does beat the 280. not many, and not by much, but for the price even 1 is too many
