You can run whatever speed you want. It's just a question of whether or not you're trying to run a certain cpu:ram ration.

ok.. well.. if i was to OC to 3.6ghz. (which i plan to) then i will be running an FSB of 400mhz (1600mhz QDR) what ratio would i need to get close to 2000mhz on the memory?

you could, BUT a 1:1 ratio delivers the MOST performance.

You'd be looking at a lousy 800mhz. I think. Now I'm not so sure. Most with DDR3 just run higher mulipliers? I guess? OK i have no idea. I'll let someone who know answer.

1:1 at that fsb, pc2 6400, 800 mhz dual channel.

At this point you do not need the 2133 mhz ddr kits for a q6600, a low cl ddr2 kit will do the trick.

Cash in the pocket, and only a few percent "loss" in performance.

Well im not after a DDR2 system. im after a DDR3 system

now considering you just told me a 1:1 would be 800mhz. using a 400mhz FSB. a 1:2 would be 1600mhz correct???

Ok... I don't really know too much, as this is my first build in ages, and so am completely new to most aspects of this. However, I've recently put together a build myself using a Q6600 and DDR3 (yes, we know DDR2 = more bang for your buck, but some boards just don't wanna be nice that way).

That said, from what I've read - DDR3 with newer boards doesn't neccesarrily need a 1:1 ratio for optimal performance. If I find the thread or article I read that on, I'll let you know. There's also a nice sticky concerning RAM (more info on DDR2 ram, but still) that kinda broke down the conceptions behind different brands. After reviewing that, and some other thread that told me the OCZ Gold DDR3s had the best type of chipset, I went with OCZs because they were cheap and supposedly had this good chipset type in them.

Can you tell I'm a complete noob yet? Anyways, for what its worth that's what I learned in my research. If I find the relevant links I'll post them.

Can we get this guy some informed help? hehe, anyways, good luck with your build!

~TkH

OCZ Gold DDR3s have D9GTNs (which is good)
