At the very least, professional support. If you want that from Linux you need to go Red Hat, which can get very pricey.

Work/school was the same reason I got my MBP. I couldn't image using anything else.

Exactly. If I can't play games on it, then it's just for doing work, which is no fun and boring.

It amazes me how much it hurts people to know that microsoft might finally get some competition. Even if it was 75% of people using windows - why does it hurt peoples' feelings that, be it apple or any other company, windows might get a competitor?

Same here. I want to start using Linux again as my main OS, but I really don't want to split up my records (document organization, chat logs, etc.) between 2 OSs (again).

Games are exactly what is on the mind of every person as they venture to the store to purchase a brand new computer.

Perhaps everyone forgot that this isn't a pro-OSX or anti-windows thread, but a thread on the numbers indicating a change in market share. Why can't you guys talk about THAT?

OK! OK! I'm jumping ship... MS won't last another month tops. Hmmm what OS should I use? I guess I should start by re-purchasing my software library.

Reading these posts reminded me of something when I got my first PC back in 1993. Why did I get a PC instead of an Apple? Games and Apps! There was just a whole lot more software for PC's, and that's been pretty much true ever since.

But nowadays, it seems like game developers are flocking away from PC's and towards consoles. EA has had a PC version of Madden every year since 1995... but they chose to cancel it in 2008. What happens when most of the game developers have abandoned the PC platform? Granted, there's companies like Blizzard who are still making a lot of money from PC users... but you can play their games on Macs too.

There's also the issue of applications. If all your friends had PC's, and you wanted to share files & applications, well you better get a PC too. That isn't necessarily the case anymore... most mainstream applications are cross platform. And in some cases (ex - Google Docs) don't even need to be installed.

If games and applications aren't designed exclusively for Windows PC's, Microsoft will continue to lose market share. Apple won't take over as long as it keeps pricing its products so high... but I could definitely see them cutting off a larger slice of the pie. And Linux could become a factor if OEM's start packaging it with new computers like the Asus Eee PC.
