Why Upgrade if you have say a 8800GT - Page 3

We all work hard for our cash, and I know for sure I'm not blowing +/- $300 every 4 - 6 months just for minimal increases in graphics performance.

I know a guy that buys a new phone every time a new one comes out. But hey, it's his money that he "worked for" that he doesn't care about, let him piss it away.

An average person buys a PC to last them at least 3 years I would say. That's different from us gear heads you see on OCN, which makes up a smaller fraction of PC owners. If it's part of they're hobby to buy new stuff every month, well so be it.

Odd. My 7600GT could 1280x1024 with about 15 FPS, I know it's not a lot but...c'mon an 8800GT can definitely pull more.

If you ask me, I say that if all the games you have can be maxed out, and you don't plan on getting any games soon that you can't max out, then there is no reason to upgrade. Think about it: if you're already getting 100% of what you ask for, what is throwing more money on it going to do for you?

The toughest game in terms of graphics I have is Doom 3. My 7950GT + Athlon 64 X1 3800+ plays it perfectly for me. Any further upgrading is going to yield me no more gains. It would literally be giving money away to the companies.

yeah, but he's running 1680x1050. Resolutions can kill graphics cards. That's one of the other reasons people upgrade, because they get bigger monitors. I garuntee an 8800GTX won't max out anything current get at 2560xWhateverTheMonitorsThatRunThisRezAreTooEffing Big

For me, I can't max out most games released from 2007 and on.

If you consider 30fps smooth, then there's probably no reason to get better then a 8800gt though, especially if you don't use a high resolution.

I upgraded from a 2900xt 512 to a 8800 gts 512. Although it wasn't a huge performance increase, there were other things to consider. The gts 512 uses about half the power of a 2900xt and it runs much cooler. I don't know when my next upgrade might be. Probably not for a while..........

I made my X1900XT last two years. Just bought a used 8800GT a week or so ago and it plays everything I have maxed with 16xCSAA and 16xAF at 1920x1200. Well worth the $75 upgrade after selling my X1900XT. It's also really nice having the Nvidia control panel and nhancer instead of ATI's crappy CCC and ATItool / ATI Tray Tools.

I'll do another $75 upgrade again when a GTX280 equivalent or better reaches the same $130 that I paid for the 8800GT.

I'm going to second the addicting comment. I just bought a new CPU cooler, comp case, and a 4870 because I wanted to, not because I need to.
