Overclocking my 5000+ BE

Thread Starter
Hello all -

I recently purchased some hardware to build my new PC from the ground up (minus the chassis), as my old PC was pretty much outdated (P4 3Ghz, no PCI-e slot, DDR1 RAM, etc). I bought a good MB and an AMD 5000+ BE CPU, mainly for the unlocked multiplier.

Right now I am taking my time and going through durch's write-up on overclocking my system. I've been able to isolate the MB and have a good idea of where the reference clock and HT multiplier become unstable, and am working through the CPU isolation now.

My question is this. Am I going to see the best results overclocking my system by overclocking my reference clock against just increasing the CPU multiplier and CPU voltage, seeing that the BE processor has the nifty unlocked multiplier?

My goal is to get the PC running stable with the highest possible settings, which I am sure is a common goal amongst all of us. I believe that the hardware which I purchased is well suited for overclocking, so overclocking anything in the system would be fine, so long as it runs stable.

Thanks in advance.

MegaTherion.... welcome to OCN! I think your best results will probably come from a combination of raising both the CPU multi and ref. clock.... but you'll have to do some testing to find the most effective mix of settings for you.

Good luck with your OC pursuit!

I've done it both ways, it seems faster to me, even with the ram on a divider, with a high fsb...This is as fast as I've gotten it..5000BE @ 3510*10...This is my stable and what I'm running it on now...5000 BE @ 3440mhz*10.

As I worked on clocking up my CPU last night, I managed to get it up to 3184 MHz 13x multiplier with a reference clock of 245. Core voltage is at 1.3750. Seems my big problem right now is the CPU cooler. I must need better thermal grease as my CPU is running about 53 degrees running Orthos. I've got the CPU fan at max speed (roughly 2100 rpms).

9 hours 20 minutes and counting, hoping this will yield a stable speed for me.

Not bad, Is it at a 1-1 at that clock?

Not sure what you are asking by 1-1. Is that cpu bus speed-memory speed, both equally overclocked?

I finally got some decent results after about 2 days of tinkering and finding my hardwares limits.

Here's what I found. The max reference clock I could run on the system was 305 with a 5x HT multiplier. I tried bumping the HT multiplier down to 4x and 3x, but still failed during testing. I would assume that the max reference clock is probably more around the 285-290 mark at 5x HT multp.

Max CPU speed I was able to attain was 3185 MHz at a 245 reference clock using the stock 13.0 multiplier at about 1.4250 volts. When I pushed the voltage to 1.4500 the CPU temperatures exceeded 55 degrees.

Max RAM speed was roughly ddr-1024 at 2.1000 volts, with a 5-5-5-15-26-2T timing.

After I found out all that info, I was able to mess around with the numbers until I found a good starting point for fine tinkering.

I ended up with the reference clock at 256 with a 12.5x Multiplier, giving me a total of 3200 MHz. The RAM was running at DDR2-800 5-5-5-15-26-2T 2.1000 volts with a Divider of 7, CPU/7 or 457 MHz (DDR2-914).

I was really hoping to push the CPU a little further, as the RAM was stable at the higher speeds, but I kept failing Orthos Small FFT testing when I pushed the CPU over about 3250 MHz. If I increased the voltage over 1.4500 I would again exceed the 55 degree mark.

Here are some screenshots of my results, feel free to critique or give any advice.

MegaTherion, is this your first time overclocking? I think you did a great job. It seems like to me you understand the procedure quite well.

That is some nice overclocking memory you have there. Your overall OC on your processor looks solid too. If your wanting to exceed 1.45 Vcore then I would recommend picking up an aftermarket cooler. My choice of coolers alway come from Thermalright but there are several other brands out there that are just as good or even better.

One thing to note with the Brisbane core is that you may get "strange" temp readings. Apparently some chipsets have troubles reading the sensor on the processor. There's quite few speculative ideas out there about the issue.

Good luck and keep OC'ing
