Safe voltage for Q9450? - Page 3

Trying to break the 3GHz line. I've been trying to do so since I got a windsor 4600+ few years ago. I would be happy with an OC to 3.0~3.2. And if I can with stock or near stock voltage even better.

I hope a BIOS update fixes this issue.

I managed to update the BIOS to the latest version... But I still fail to get "stable" enough to fully boot to windows.

What did you set the memory voltage/timings at. We have been overclocking the striker 2 extreme and boy can it be a pain. anyway it was the memory voltage causing most the grief, we manually set the voltage to recommenced voltage and timings unlinked, also the NB@1.4 and it overclocked no problem at all.

The voltage for your memory
1GB Modules: CL7-6-6-24 1.9V
2GB Modules: CL7-7-6-22 1.8V
1.85V - 1.95V Extended Voltage Protection

Hope it helps but yeah that board was a pain to get right.

Finally! Got it to run @ 3.4GHz (1700FSB-425x8) @ 1.26vID with 1.5v on the NB. Stable for 30m of prime 95, but it got to 74ºC so I reduced to 425x7.5 (3187MHz). Going to test with these settings.

Ram during these tests was always at 1700MHz @ 7/7/7/24/2T @ 1.96v to keep at 2:1 ratio.

Wow, your thread has been the most helpful on the 9450 so far.. Thanks to some of your stats I now have mine running at 3.6...for 2 hours so far running the Prime95.

Though I do seem to be running abit hot in the coolant department, I'm probably gonna replace this thermaltake POS with a good, larger Koolance top mount external next month to compensate...82C for a core is TOO HOT.

Real quick...just to make sure I understand. I've been having trouble hitting 3.4GHz and getting Prime95 to pass without getting a relatively quick core failure (usually either Core 3 or 4). I have a Gigabyte EP45-DS3R that has serious Vdroop. Right now, at 3.2GHz (stable although I've only run Prime 95 for about an hour and a half before stopping...I know I should let it go longer) my Vcore setting in the BIOS is 1.325V. After Vdrop and at idle CPU-Z (or the BIOS or HW Monitor) show my actual voltage as 1.28V. The minute I turn on Prime95 and the cores go to 100% my voltage drops to 1.22V (that is a high Vdroop in my opinion). Is the 1.36V Intel spec threshold for this processor a BIOS value, idle value (i.e. after Vdrop has occurred), or full load value (after Vdroop has been "suffered." I'm going to bump my BIOS value to 1.34 or 1.35V and see what my Vdrop and Vdroop values are then. I'm assuming that to get a stable overclock at 3.4GHz I need my Vdroop to be at least over 1.25V? I'm obviously just fearful of overvolting. Also, unfortunately, my board has no loadline calibration or Vdroop dampening feature. I've tried to read up and can't find if VID (mine is 1.25V) is the stock value pre or post Vdrop, pre or post Vdroop, or BIOS setting. I don't think it would be just the BIOS setting as everyone's motherboards have different degrees of Vdrop and Vdroop. Lastly, as I play with the CPU voltages to get a good stable overclock at 3.4GHz...what threshold in CPU-Z or HW Monitor should I be looking out for. I assume it is 1.36V, but is that with Prime95 running or at idle? This is a great thread for "students" like myself who are learning to better overclockers and keep a stable system. Thanks in advance.

2.0 is a safe voltage for the q9450
your an idiot. do not listen to razr7. 2v is an instant death. i would say.
if you want to keep it safe stick to 1.36 and under.

Don't worry...I knew that was way too much. Right now I have my BIOS set at 1.35V which, after massive vdrop and vdroop has me at 1.248V in Prime95 at 3.4GHz. I also had to increase my DRAM voltage to 2.18V BIOS (2.14V actual) to get stable memory. Good so far. I even have a little bit of headroom voltagewise on the CPU if I need to bump a little higher.
