Safe voltage for Q9450? - Page 4

What CPU PLL and CPU Termination voltages are you using? I had mine on Auto until I found out my board was setting my PLL at 1.65V. I read that anything over 1.6V for normal use was bad. I manually set it to 1.57V and set my Termination voltage at 1.24V. Stock PLL is 1.5V and stock CPU Termination is 1.2V.

I know that this thread is in idle mode for cca. 2 years, but I'm wondering if you can please help me with my oc. I can't get 3.2 with voltage on auto (1.35V). Is that normal? I get BSOD in 10 minutes running OCCT.

Here are my default settings:

EDIT: My system is the one in my signature.

What's the voltage of the 780i northbridge?

The 780's hated quads, and may still do, usually you'll have to bump up the FSB and NB voltages a bit to be able to overclock any. It's the exact reason why Gigabytes EP45 boards were/are so popular.

And next time, just start your own thread.

EDIT: You're also running 8GB of RAM which is already stressing the NB as it is. So try setting the NB voltage to 1.4, the CPU to 1.35, the FSB to 1.35, and make sure that your RAM isn't running out of specs, try to only overclock one item at a time.

On that board you'll be giving the NB more voltage than the processor.

as i have read this thread and some ( some more^^ ) 775 quad oc threads, especially 45nm i can tell that u had a little bad luck with ur chip @ civilr.. ur vid is 1.25 so u need a higher voltage ( so higher temps too ) for a moderate overclock than other cpus..

one question, did u try to make the smalles multiplier and find out where your fsb wall is?
i would be interested in that. some other things i know is that you should get an active cooler for your northbridge when running it on 1.5 (speaking about my board - look in sig ).. maybe a complete cooler set.. it cost only about 15-20$
what is the stock nb voltage on ur board?

i raised my q9300 from 2.5 to 3.5 @ 1.32vcore.. my vid is 1.2v nb is 1.42 and fsb ram term is at 1.35v ... i do not know what differences ur board is doing but i can imagine that i could run the same chip with similar settings on 4ghz in my rig.

maybe u could install some temp sensors in ur sys.. i placed one of them between NB and NB passive cooler ( not direct, but a lil bit on the side ) and replaced the vanilla thermal rubber with some mx3 thermal paste, added an active cooler and so decreased the nb temp by 10 degrees Celsius.. sry i got almost offtopic.

anyway, good luck with that chip.. it got a better multi than mine so OCing it should be more fun ;D

cheers

edit: although i do believe max vcore should be slight under 1.4v .. i would try to stay under the intel spec 1.3625... im a scared rabbit, you know ^^

Thx guys, I really appreciate your help.

Actually I'm running 4GB ram now, and NB isn't overheating even on 1.55V (max) because my mobo has an active cooler in default. So putting temperatures sensors and better thermal past makes no sense at this point. I think that stock NB is about 1.4V.

Before I started any OC I lowered my RAM frequency to 600 and loosen up the timings (7-7-7-21), left everything else on auto but I still couldn't get it working on 3.2. It didn't work even if I set my NB voltages to 1.55V.

I always set my multiplier to to max (8x), I never searched for a FSB wall, since I don't have a bloody idea how to do that. =)

I have managed to get it stable at 3.6Ghz@1.5vcore in BIOS. That is sad. It's not good for the CPU. Although the temperatures under 100% load don't go over 70°C.

Other settings are:
CPU VTT: 1.4V
SPP:1.55V

else on auto.

I'm trying to reduce the voltage without any success. What should I do?

i too am having issues with my EVGA 780i SLI motherboard. I can boot to 3.6 but i always get core 1 to fail on any stress. OCCT will autoshut down due to over temp.. going to try again now, i have removed the MB heatsinks and cleaned with ArctiClean 1,2 and reapplied Ceramique on all surfaces so we will see. also have the Corsair H50 keeping the processor chilled. Biggest issue for me i think is my amb temp 82 degress F = 27.78 C
