Computer turning off randomly and hard locking with high pitch sound HELP - Page 2

If its a driver issue with the sound card as stated. Remove the drivers and device and see if it cures it.
Memtest wouldn't hurt... try running it over nite.

Has anyone experienced the power loss problems I'm having before and it not been because of the PSU? I just rewired everything putting in the new PSU so I know nothing is shorting out.

If you had a bad stick of ram the system probably would not boot past the initial bios screen... More than likely its not ram, and you are using a new PSU, so no problem there, a bad processor will keep you from booting also, that probably isnt it. Either your install of Windows is corrupt, or you have a bad motherboard... I'm more inclined to suggest that your install of Windows has been corrupted by something. its pretty hard to ruin a motherboard. You need a couple of things to do that: A surge of power to the mobo, Or excessive heat for a prolonged period... If you can eliminate those as a possibility; i.e. you are on a surge protector and have adequite cooling then look to the OS as the source of the problem. Are you using a hardware sound card? If so, remove that and plug into the onboard audio, see if it is still happening then. If it still does it then your sound card is not the issue. If all this does not help: Pop the Cmos battary, wait 10 minutes and reboot... still having a problem then? ditch the install of windows, do a full format of the C drive and wait to see if it happens again. If the reinstall does not fix it then i think you have established that your motherboard has gone bad... Hope that helps. I had this type of issue with a dual socket 603 supermicro zeon motherboard. I tried continuously until i finally figured out that it was indeed a bad mobo. Bad motherboards will run and perform to a certain extent then crash the OS in some circumstances, depending on what's gone bad on it.

i have had similar problems when dealing with a faulty SATA cable for when i was using a raid 0 array over 4 raptors. since then i've been running just 3 drives in raid 5 and haven't had that problem, as i'm testing my new cable out by using the 4th raptor as a slave... anyways, it is possible for a lockup and shutdown to occur with a faulty hdd cable, or even a bad hdd, when your OS is installed on the faulty drive/(cable).

i do recommend a full RAM diagnostic though, non-ecc memory can be evil sometimes... other than that, i would try an OS reinstall.

Thanks guys for all the help, the only problem is it's so hard to replicate and I know its not a temp issue and my OS seems to be running flawlessly never had a virus yet, problems like this are very annoying.

However I will do the long process of elimination

It's completely random, nothing that I could think of.

However I recently just realized that I think Everest is causing it... How silly is that. If I open up Everest, my lcd poster starts flashing (mobo) and the system will eventually just lock up. I uninstalled it for the second time and will observe to see if it shuts down or locks up. I originally put everest on all the time with the cpu and gpu temps displays on my task bar around the same time this started happening so we'll see.

Don't be so quick to blame your OS, 99% of the time your problems are from a driver conflict or something you installed be it hardware or software, It's fairly difficult to corrupt your OS unless you are actively chomping away at your registry.

I just rebuilt this system not to long ago with a full reformat and reinstallation of my OS...

Porschedrifter, I have the same problem as well with Everest while playing games. If I keep the app open while gaming my machine will either lockup or produce "random skips/jerking" in the game. Not running the application during gaming solved my problems.

You have quite a few hard drives. What brands/models are they? Have you performed surface scans on all of them? One bad sector can cause problems.

Good luck

Yeah I too thought maybe it was a hard drive flaking, but they are all fairly new and I've been checking the SMART data and nothing has come up worth looking at. So far so good, no turn off's or lock ups since I uninstalled everest. I'm keepin my fingers crossed....
