Sisters Xp Machine seems pretty bogged down , suggestions ??

The other day my sister called me said her pc didnt work, I posted a thread which got removed, it was about getting past the admin pswrd in recovery console. Well i got past the issue got the pc running and all, but it seems awefully slow. It is a dell dimension e 510 Its got a pentium D2.8 and also 2 80 gb drives i guess set up as a mirror also 1 Gb of ddr 667 and onboard video intel 945 chipset.

A few things right off the bat are there are 2 intel graphics coming up only 1 installs correctly and the other says it doesnt have resources to start ive removed one both no matter what i end up at the same spot , and also there is something under System devices in device manager called ISAPNP Read data port that is not installed correctly. besides thjat the pc is really slow, i scanned for viruses with avg and found none, the hd was pretty fragmented and after cleaning it up with diskeeper i didnt really see a difference in performance. Also in diskeeper there was quite a bit of pink which means low performing system files, can anyone tell me what that really means, Is it a slow read time as in i should start some diagnostics or is it nothing.

Im sure ram will speed it up, im gonna look into what it will take but i feel like its really bogged down , any suggestions from you guys . I was thinking the pc broke cause my neices and nephews are young and dl viruss' but she told me today she basically randomly shut down the pc so thats probably what did it. Im sure there has been a ton of programs installed and uninstalled , maybe i can clean that up somehow, Ive heard of ccleaner or whatever is that something i should look into, Im pretty sure its clean of viruses but what else will use alot of resources, ive looked thru the tweak guides and some not all of the stuff is basically normal practice for me so , im usually in pretty good shape to start. Throiugh some ideas my way id really appreciate it Thanks

Word of the wise....
Sometimes it is a choice between data and the integrity of the OS...
Choose the OS always because you can always get the saves back...if you really save/back up them

Sorry about the previous thread removal but that topic is inappropriate here.

Remove all graphic cards in the Device manager and reboot, it should find the drivers since there already in there.

If the PC hasn't been Defraged recently, do so.

CC Cleaner will remove all the useless junk like .tmp or temporary files.

Not necessary I had a feeling but wanst positive since the circumstances, anyway i got thru it and thats all that matters, Im sorry for posting it i guess.
I have removed them and restarted and the same thi ng happens idk why i did do the defrag , do you happen to know what pink means or if its referring to the integrity of the drive or not, there was a quite a bit pink.

Besides ttemp internet files and other temp files i manually remove , you guys recommend i run ccleaner? I have never used that and im afraid to create some horror story for myself. is that fairly unlikely i will hose the pc by running it ??

You think it's Malware? that should've been ruled out after the scans...I'm thinking its voltage on the CPU or PSU being weak...

Idk what it is thats why im looking for usefull suggestions here. Its a dell e510 no thing out of the ordinary, no mods or anything , psu seems ok it doesnt power orr or anything , I just think its running pretty slow, idk maybe im soo used to my pc but i would think it would be alot faster . like over 3 min boot time from button push to desktop and no HDD activity. it just drags on and on , cant really open 2-3 windows and navigate between them ok. keep the suggestions coming Thx

Ok, where to start... It may or may not be clean of viruses, but my bet is that it isn't. I doubt that your dual graphics coming up or really any device is causing the slowness, including the RAM. It's not enough these days to run an antivirus program on a computer and call it clean, you have to run several different types of programs to look for spyware, adware, and viruses. In my experience, you probably won't find all of those things scanning while booted up from that HDD, they love to hide in the files that they know are going to be exempted, like restore files. There are really two choices that will save you some time here, and those are 1) scan the HDDs from another computer for viruses, spyware and adware or 2) remove the partition, format and reinstall the OS (or probably recovery disk from Dell). The reason I say that is that you could literally spend days, even weeks, trying to figure out what is wrong with this system. (How do I know? Guess... ) The question that you need to ask is how important is the data on the disk(s) in order to determine which one you should do. If your sister has things that can be replaced easily or are backed up, by all means, go with option 2. If there are things that are irreplaceable, try to save them to a CD or DVD or something if the system still works, then scan those files with another system for viruses, etc. and then go with option 2. Odds are that option 2 will fix the hardware problems.

1GB of DDR2 667 will run XP fine, I've run it easily with 512MB of PC133 RAM.

Of course, there is always option 3...which is take it to someone and pay them to "make it go". But where is the fun in that?

That's what I would suggest, but you make the call.
Finally...

If you ctrl+alt+del right after startup, how many running processes do you have, and what percentage of your cpu is being used? If you have more than say, 30-35 running processes, there's a bit of cleaning up that needs to be done.

If your computer is using a high percentage of cpu, you can look and see which program is using the most. If it is a non-essential program, end the process and see if it helps. If it does, remove the program, or remove it from the start up list.

Go to start>run>msconfig then click on the startup tab, and uncheck any programs that aren't essential to the start up of the computer (adobe, msnmsgs, aim, any chat programs or printer software, these can all be started manually when they are needed) Only leave the essential files.

If none of this helps, it could be an OS issue, and a clean install might be the best way to fix it.
